Come Thou Fount
Inside Out Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come thou Fount of every blessing;
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above,
Praise the mount; I'm fixed upon it:
Mount of thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by
Thy help I'm come
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home,
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love,
Here's my heart. O take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand'ring from the fold of God,
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed his precious blood,
/Prone to wander, Lord I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love./
O to grace how great a debtor Daily
I'm constrained to be!
Let they goodness, like a fetter, Bind
My wandering heart to thee

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love.

Here's my heart. O take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Inside Out's "Come Thou Fount" is an appeal to God to be the source of every blessing in life. The singer asks God to tune his heart to sing of His grace and mercy that never cease. The streams of mercy that flow from God are so astounding that they call for songs of the loudest praise. The singer then asks to be taught some melodious sonnet, which is sung by the flaming tongues above, and to be fixed upon the mount of God's redeeming love.

The second verse begins with the phrase "Here I raise my Ebenezer," which refers to 1 Samuel 7:12, where Samuel sets up a stone monument to commemorate God's help in delivering Israel from the Philistines. The verse is the singer's acknowledgment of God's help in his life thus far and his hope that, by God's good pleasure, he will safely arrive at his eternal home. The singer confesses that he is prone to wander away from God and admits that he needs God's help to avoid it. He then offers God his heart, asking Him to take and seal it for His courts above.

The third verse is a testimony of how Jesus sought and rescued the singer when he was wandering away from God. Through the interposition of Jesus' precious blood, the singer was rescued from danger, and his heart was bound to God. Like the writer of the hymn, Robert Robinson, the singer acknowledges that he is prone to wander away from God and be in debt to His grace. He prays that God's goodness will bind his wandering heart to Him.
