In the City
Insomnio Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've looked at the sky
and I've wondered
what I'm doing here
piled up smoke and brick clouds
police and ambulance sirens
how many times
I must have thought the same
but tomorrow never comes...
maybe I'm waiting
for the suitable girl
maybe I'm waiting
for the suitable day
but the thing is that tomorrow
never comes and in the meantime,
I'm still here
in the city
The song In the City by Insomnio speaks to the feeling of being stuck in a city, unable to leave, and searching for something that may never come. The opening lines, "one more time, I've looked at the sky and I've wondered what I'm doing here," suggest a sense of confusion and questioning one's purpose in the city. The "piled up smoke and brick clouds" and "police and ambulance sirens" add to a feeling of overwhelm and chaos in the city.
The lyrics express a desire to leave, but a sense of complacency has settled in. The line "I'm leaving tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes" highlights the idea of procrastination and putting off the decision to leave. The chorus, "maybe I'm waiting for the suitable girl, maybe I'm waiting for the suitable day, but the thing is that tomorrow never comes and in the meantime, I'm still here in the city" expresses a longing for something or someone to come along and make the decision to leave easier. However, in reality, the suitable girl or suitable day may never come, and the singer may remain in the city indefinitely.
Overall, In the City by Insomnio is a poignant commentary on feeling trapped in a city and the struggle to leave. The lyrics express a sense of longing and hopelessness but also suggest that it ultimately falls on the individual to make the decision to leave.
