Irene's older brother, Roy Kral, was a successful musician when Irene started singing professionally as a teenager. She sung with bands on tours led by Woody Herman and Chubby Jackson, former Herman bass player.
Irene joined Maynard Ferguson's band in the late 1950s and sang with groups led by Stan Kenton and Shelly Manne.
Irene then started a solo career until her death at 46 years of age. She was a ballad singer who stated that Carmen McRae was one of her inspirations.
Irene was made more famous posthumously when Clint Eastwood used her recordings in his 1995 movie, The Bridges of Madison County.

I'd know you anywhere when you walked in,
I would tingle with a single glance in your eye,
Watching the starlight dance in your eye.
You saw my vacant stare, you understood,
I'd love you anywhere, honest I would,
I was certain this would happen, strange as it seems,
In Irene Kral's song "You Know Baby", the lyrics express a deep sense of familiarity and how powerful it can be. The singer says that they would recognize the person they are singing to anywhere. Their grin, their eyes, and their stare are all things that would jump out at the singer as familiar. Even just seeing a glance of starlight in their eyes makes the singer tingle. The singer goes on to say that when they first met, the other person somehow understood their vacant stare, and they assert that they would love this person anywhere, indicating a deep sense of devotion.
