1) iri is a Japanese pop and R&B singer songwriter under the Victor Entertainment sub-label Colourful Records. In 2014, iri won JAM, an audition organized by fashion magazine NYLON JAPAN and Sony Music Japan. She made her major debut with her first album Groove it, released on October 26, 2016.
iri is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter based in the ocean-side city of Zushi, in Kanagawa, Japan.
She began her career after winning a 2014 audition hosted by NYLON JAPAN magazine, and since then has quickly generated buzz for her hip-hop influenced alternative style and soulful voice.
Her first album, "Groove it," was released in October 2016 and immediately entered Japan's iTunes Store Top 10 album chart and also topped the hip-hop/rap charts.
In March 2017, she released her next single, "Watashi" which was chosen as the commercial song for Nike Women Japan. She saw more success with her next two releases, an EP "life ep," and her second album, "Juice," which also did well on the iTunes and Apple Music charts in Japan.

I discovered iri a couple of years ago, but I just had a couple of her singles on a mixed playlist. A few months back I decided to just listen to her entire discography in release order track by track while taking the train to and from London, and it was honestly one of the best musical experiences I've ever had. Every single track hit, even all the B-sides, and I couldn't believe how great her debut work was, let alone how she managed to keep it up and continue to push herself to explore new soundscapes. She has such perfect lyrical flow and she adds so much texture to the instrumentation.
I very rarely bother to comment on YouTube videos, but iri is worth gushing about. Since that trip, I've started every day by shuffling her songs while I do my morning routine, and it's genuinely made my days better. Hands down, one of the best artists working right now, and not just in Japan, in the world. Starlight lives up to everything that preceeded it, and I'm pretty sure it's physically impossible at this point for her to make a bad song. I think after 15 years of always giving the same answer when someone asks who my favourite artist is, my response has finally changed. The #1 spot just has to go to iri now, she simply never misses.
