Sunset Soon Forgotten
Iron %26 Wine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your brother's left here shaved and crazy
We've learned to hide our bottles in the well
And whats worth keeping, sun still sinking
Down and down, once again
Down and down, gone again
This june bug street sings low and lovely
Those band-aid children chased your dog away
She runs returning, suns still sinking
Down and down, once again
Down and down, gone again
The lyrics to Iron & Wine's "Sunset Soon Forgotten" paint a picture of a small town, where the singer tells us that they have learned to hide their bottles in the well, suggesting a covert drinking culture. The melancholic tone of the song is established through the opening line, "Be this sunset soon forgotten," which creates a sense of impermanence and forgetfulness. It seems as if the singer is trying to hold onto their memories of the people, animals, and sights around them before they disappear at the end of the day. The second verse then shifts focus towards a more positive image of the same town, with the "june bug street" and "band-aid children" lending a touch of nostalgia and sweetness to the lyrics. The return of the chased-away dog also hints at the cyclical nature of life, at how things come and go, but also come back again.

He has good taste in himself lol. I agree though, top 5 songs on this album (Our Endless Numbered Days): Sunset Sun Forgotten, Naked As We Came, Fever Dream, Cinders and Smoke, Sodom, Aouth Georgia. I know his later albums sold a lot more than this one did but I think this was his best.
