Iron & Wine and Calexico have been steady bellwethers of the burgeoning alt-folk scene for years. Both bands have released a grip of albums and EPs, and both have enjoyed consistent praise in music publications and on college campuses. Their collaboration was in the stars, no matter what the critics say, and both bands have delivered on the promise of their earlier work with their remarkably solid EP, In the Reins (2005).

And a bike wheel spinning on a pawn shop wall
She leaned on her colored hair
Like a butterfly wing in a summer rainfall
And the roll on the kitchen floor
Some fucker with a pocketful of foreign change
Song of the shepherd?s dog
Whoever got that brave?
Wolves in the middle of town
And the chapel bell ringing through the wind-blown trees
To wave to the butcher?s boy with the parking lot music everybody believes
And then dive like a dying bird and then they do with the daughter at the penny arcade
Song of the shepherd?s dog
Waiting around the jack caught the rooster
On a rooftop waiting for day
And you know what he's gonna say
Wolves at the end of the bed
And a postcard hidden in her winter clothes
She beat in the back of a truck
To the trailers when we trying to find the bullet hole
And then run down the canopy rows
Some mother and a baby with a cross to bear
Song of the shepherd?s dog
Little brown flea in the bottle of oil for your woolly wild hair
You'll never get him out of there
The song "Wolves" by Iron & Wine and Calexico tells a story that is open to interpretation. The use of imagery and metaphor makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact meaning of the lyrics. However, it can be interpreted as a narrative about a woman who is trying to escape a difficult situation. The wolves may symbolize danger or fear that she is running away from. The bike wheel spinning on a pawn shop wall and a postcard hidden in her winter clothes show that she may be on the run and trying to keep a low profile. The different characters in the lyrics, such as the butcher's boy and the shepherd's dog, add to the mysterious and dream-like quality of the song. Overall, the lyrics of "Wolves" evoke a sense of unease and a longing for escape.

Richard Jones 100 percent. What’s a couple of your favorite calexico songs? I honestly haven’t dove deep.

They really are. I discovered them through Iron and Wine years ago, and I've actually grown to like them more than Iron and Wine (no disrespect to Sam, I still love I&W). I work a lot of freelance video editing and graphic design, and they've been my go-to for background music while on the job. Without fail my producer or client asks about them every single time, and by the end of the gig they've got their tunes on their own phone. There's just something about them.
