Berlin, who was Jewish, was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both lyrics and music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond a rudimentary level, he composed over 3,000 songs. Many of his songs, including "God Bless America", "White Christmas", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", and "There's No Business Like Show Business," left an indelible mark on American music and culture. He produced 17 film scores and 21 Broadway scores, in addition to his individual songs.
A Couple of Swells
Irving Berlin Lyrics

We stop at the best hotels
But we prefer the country
far away from the city smells
We're a couple of sports
The pride of the tennis courts
In June, July and August
The Vanderbilts have asked us up for tea
We don't know how to get there, no sirree
No, sirree
We would drive up the Avenue but we haven't got the price
We would skate up the Avenue but there isn't any ice
We would ride on a bicycle but we haven't got a bike
So we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue
And to walk up the Avenue's what we like
Wall Street bankers are we
With plenty of currency
We'd open up the safe
but we forgot where we put the key
We're the favorite lads
Of girls in the picture ads
We'd like to tell you who we kissed
last night but we can't be cads
The Vanderbilts are waiting at the club
But how are we to get there? that's the rub
That's the rub
We would sail up the Avenue but we haven't got a yacht
We would drive up the Avenue but the horse we had was shot
We would ride on a trolley car but we haven't got the fare
So we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue
Yes, we'll walk up the Avenue 'til we're there
The song A Couple of Swells is a playful and whimsical tune that describes two characters who consider themselves to be high society figures. The song's lyrics describe the couple's desire to attend the Vanderbilt's tea party, but they don't have the means to get there. The lyrics are clever and full of imagery that paints a comical picture of their struggles to get to the party.
The couple of swells seem to be at ease with the finer things in life, as they stop at the best hotels and play tennis on the most prestigious courts. However, they prefer the countryside to the city and find that nature is much more appealing. They are also quick to point out their financial status as Wall Street bankers with plenty of currency, but they are still unable to get to the Vanderbilt's tea party.
The song is playful and the humor in the lyrics still resonates with audiences today. It's a reminder to laugh at ourselves and not to take life too seriously, and that happiness is achievable even if you have to walk up the Avenue to get there.
