Annie Get Your Gun: I got the sun in the morning
Irving Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse:]
Taking stock of what I have and what I haven't
What do I find?
The things I got will keep me satisfied
Checking up on what I have and what I haven't
What do I find?
A healthy balance on the credit side

[1st refrain:]
Got no diamond, got no pearl
Still I think I'm a lucky girl
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Got no mansion, got no yacht
Still I'm happy with what I've got
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Sunshine gives me a lovely day
Moonlight gives me the Milky Way
Got no checkbooks, got no banks
Still I'd like to express my thanks
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
And with the sun in the morning
And the moon in the evening
I'm all right

[2nd refrain:]
Got no butler, got no maid
Still I think I've been overpaid
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
-I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Got no silver, got no gold
What I got can't be bought or sold
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
-I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Sunshine gives me a lovely day
Moonlight gives me the Milky Way
Got no heirlooms for my kin
Made no will but when I cash in
I leave the sun in the morning and the moon at night
And with the sun in the morning
And the moon in the evening they're all right

[3rd refrain:]
Got no mansion, got no yacht
Still I'm happy with what I've got
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Got no silver, got no gold
What I got can't be bought or sold
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
Sunshine gives me a lovely day
Moonlight gives me the Milky Way
Got no checkbooks, got no banks
Still I'd like to express my thanks
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
And with the sun in the morning

And the moon in the evening
I'm all right

Watched a lot of old movies especially musicals (went to see some live performances at the Hershey Theatre and other local places in Pennsylvania) and since I am related to Dolly Parton and other musicians down in TN, I am a music enthusiast. My grandfather liked all genres of music as well, but he sang and played good ole mountain music and was a well known local musician in the Gatlinburg area. My Dad was from Hershey, PA, and thanks to Mr. Hershey, he was also exposed to a lot of different genres. He would often go to Hersheypark when the Bandshell was there as well as other places within the park, and the Hershey Ballroom where they often had big bands plus Broadway musicals and movies at the Hershey Theatre. The funny thing is, my Mom loved the popular, swing, and jazz singers and my Dad ended up liking the country musicians and rock 'n roll singers which included Doo-Wop which he sang on the street corners in Harrisburg. They both agreed on Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. We also had music appreciation classes at school in Hershey and studied musicals. The high school always performed a play or a musical play each year. This song was from Annie Get Your Gun-- a musical about Annie Oakley and her romance with Frank Butler. They both were marksmen or sharpshooters in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. They had a romance going on back then.
