Easter Parade
Irving Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it,
You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade.
I'll be all in clover and when they look you over,
I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade.

On the avenue, fifth avenue, the photographers will snap us,
And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure.
Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet,
And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter parade.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Irving Berlin's song Easter Parade paint an image of a romantic couple preparing to attend the annual Easter Parade, a tradition in New York City where people dress up in their best spring attire and stroll down Fifth Avenue. The singer describes his lover as wearing an Easter bonnet with all the frills, making her the grandest lady in the parade. He exclaims that he will be all in clover (a symbol of good luck) and incredibly proud to have her by his side. The couple arrives in style on Fifth Avenue, where photographers document their good fortune and their beautiful outfits. The singer even suggests that he could write a sonnet about his lover's exquisite Easter bonnet and how happy he is to be taking her to the parade.

The song, while ostensibly about the Easter Parade, is also a love song in disguise. The singer is smitten with his partner and can't resist boasting about her stunning outfit and their shared experience. The Easter Parade is an occasion for the couple to spend time together and show off their love in public. Overall, the song celebrates the joy of spring, the excitement of dressing up, and the thrill of being in love.

“Easter Parade” is a great musical number even
no matter who may sing it. This also proves Irving Berlin was a genius. He created a
number of amazing songs. All of them are great comforts to me.

I have always loved Sarah Vaughan -perhaps the best female vocalist ever.

Not unlike the film that bears its name , the song " Easter Parade " had a rocky road to success . The melody was originally given a different lyric and title by Berlin , called " Smile And Show Your Dimple . " Quickly forgotten , Berlin reused the melody for a spot in his 1933 Broadway revue Thousands Cheer . With the tune transformed into " Easter Parade , " introduced by Clifton Webb and Marilyn Miller , it instantly became a perennial standard .
