Last Words
Isaac Gracie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fever rising in the setting sun
Cocaine in your eyes and bullets in your gun
'N' blood in your nails is scratching for the faith
With a noose 'round your neck and a needle in your vein

Ooh, and you say
How did I get here and can I get back
I thought I was having fun, but no
I was just looking for the one
Always looking for the one

Well, you don't thank fuck that you got it all
Now your friends have left you and you're on your own
And the woman in your life wasn't quite enough
So, you let her go and leave you and it broke your heart

Ooh, and you say
How did I get here and can I get back
I thought I was having fun, but no
I was just looking for the one
Always looking for the one

Well, your mind is empty and your heart is cold
And your last routines are getting old
Now, people seeing through your web of lies
And they're fucking the demons that pour inside

Ooh, and you say
How did I get here and can I get back
I thought I was having fun, but no
I was just looking for the one
Always looking for the one

Careful what you wish for from the steady life
If you want too much you might lose your mind
If you only want the woman you saw on TV
Then your eyes are open but you just can't see

Ooh, and you say
How did you get here and will you get back
I thought we were having fun, but no
We were just looking for the one
Always, looking for the one

How did I get here and can I get back
I thought I was having fun, but no

I was just looking for the one
Always, looking for you

Overall Meaning

In Isaac Gracie's song Last Words, the singer paints a vivid picture of a person who has succumbed to the darkness that comes with the excessive search for pleasure, without any concern for morality. The person's energy is drained, and the fever is rising; the coke in their eyes and the guns in their possession describes their hedonistic lifestyle that drives them to the edge. The nails that bleed while scratching the wall for the faith illustrate the struggle to hold on to reality, while a noose is hanging around their neck, and a needle is in their vein as they fear losing anything that could satisfy their cravings. They wonder how they got to this point and wonder if it is possible to get back to where they used to be. They thought they were having fun and enjoying life, but it turns out, they were only looking for the one thing that will make them feel alive.

The second stanza talks about how the person's excessive lifestyle has left them alone, with no one to turn to, as their friends have left them behind. They had a woman in their life, but that wasn't enough, and they let her go, and it broke their heart. Their mind is empty, their heart is cold, and their routines have gotten old. People can see through the facade of lies the person has created as the demons inside them take over.

In the final verse, the singer warns of the danger of wishing for the wrong things in life. Wanting too much can lead you down a path of destruction, and if you fixate on something that never materializes, you can lose your mind. The person looking for the one thing on TV is an example of this. They have their eyes open, but they can't see what's right in front of them.

I love that there is a new generation of singer songwriters taking music back to the purity of the 60's and 70's and putting their mark on it. Isaac Gracie, Tom Odell, Ben Howard, Passenger, Jake Bugg, George Gracie, Sawyer Fredricks, James Bay just to name a few . I hope the world embraces this wonderfully organic sound and allows it to flourish. Very refreshing change from all the over produced synthesized overdubbed and over mixed pop that we have grown to love and hate at the same time. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy all music but given my choice, I like the sound of a voice and guitar just putting it out there., clean and simple. I look forward to listening to more of Isaac' music he is so refreshing!!!
