Bream... a rock star with a classical guitar. So much passion and balls in his playing. Also pathos and tenderness. Music is an emotional language and his diction was so clear... his intent so plain and direct. A bit like Gould in the clarity of his phrasing, too... he always knew what the composer was trying to get across and brought it to life with skill and heart.

I was looking for something profound to say , you beat me to it !. I couldn’t put it better. Years ago I was playing at the Old Brewery In Mere Wiltshire, with the Cambridge City Jassband. Julian sat on the grass and listened to our set. Afterwards, in my old VW Camper I said to my Wife how much I would like to meet him, but of course, was too shy. She promptly disappeared and 10 minutes later returned with Julian who announced “ If You Won’t Come To Meet Me, I’ll Come To Meet You “ !. I was speechless !.
We shared a couple of beers, and spoke of Elizabethan Music, the Lute, And Jazz Guitar. I’ve never recovered from this !. The most wonderful player, humanitarian and Gentleman. God Bless,

Bream is one of those rare guitarist like Paco de Lucia - it doesn't matter what anyone does in the future it's impossible to improve on their artistry. It's not just brilliant technique it's a very profound sense of expression. Whatever they think and feel they are able to express through an instrument. it never gets old.

Russell is superb but not on Breams level, vidovic is another step down from Russell, Segovia is undoubtedly very influential but as a player he’s possibly the most overrated guitar player ever.

I genuinely think this is the most perfect piece of guitar playing I’ve ever heard from any genre. I’ve been playing guitar for 20 years, and I’ve never heard such perfection. He makes it sound like a fucking orchestra!!

Truly inspiring and musically sublime playing by the supreme guitar maestro and a nice clip from ‘The Guitar in Spain’ series made by Channel 4 in the mid-eighties. Nice Andalusian scenery especially in the Plaza de Espana - a must visit place in Seville.

Bream's version has much better clarity and vibrato in the melody than John Williams version but I wish he stuck to the strict timing. He's dragging the timing consistently in this piece and it's a dance so strict timing should be followed.

Julian Bream was the first guitarist I ever saw live, at Mechanics Hall in Worcester mass, probably in 78 or 79. I met him back stage, shook his hand and he signed my concert program, which I still have today. He was my first guitar inspiration, and one of the best that I can ever remember. May his legend live a thousand years, as will his master, Andreas Segovia. May you all live forever in Guitar heaven. And may you continue to inspire me for the rest of my life. Sevilla, by Albeniz, was always my favorite challenge. And one of my most favorites to play. I will miss him dearly.

Both Julian Bream and John Williams are my favorites, but the Julian Bream recordings sound richer and fuller. Not sure if it is just the skill of the recording technicians or artists. Please note I am not saying one is better than the other as I will never reach their guitar mastery within my life time. I enjoy listening to both of them play.

In my younger years I preferred JW's interpretation of this piece, but as time goes on I feel Bream really captured soul Spain in his playing whereas JW is approaching it from more a technical standpoint. Both are great but Bream puts you in Spain on the streets and in the palaces which inspired this piece.

Julian Bream is great. I just wish he would leave us his arranged transcriptions. I don't know why he didn't. Most players would say they are Segovia's students because there are so many of his arrangements . I don't know of any Bream's Albeniz or Granados transcriptions. So sad.

Yes, I'd love to have some of his written work too. Since Julian Bream is still alive - he may in fact have a plan for this as part of his estate planning. Time will tell. Either way the man has given a TREMENDOUS gift to the world already. :) The other fact is, it wasn't as much as his transcriptions as much as his interpretation that gave Bream his unique sound. I think that's there to be discovered for any and all who wish.

When I was a young teenager (mid to late 60's) and studying the guitar Alirio Diaz from Venezuela and Julian Bream were considered the "ant pants" of classical guitarists, with Williams being the young up and coming star. Everyone spoke about the great Segovia but I never got to hear him (only some very poor quality recordings). Other great but lesser known players included Narcisso Yepes, Jose Luis Gonzalez etc but I think I'd be safe in saying none ever came close to Julian Bream. No matter!

Apart from all his other gifts what set Julian apart from all other classical guitarists was his time, placing each note exactly where it needed to be on the pulse so the music never falters. Something he absorbed from Django Reinhardt perhaps.

Such touch, control and soul. Julian Bream is an utter genius. As someone who can (sort of) play the slow middle section, I am in awe of this man's talent. I can't see how I could EVER play it anywhere near as well as he.
