The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else
Isham Jones And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The one I love belongs to somebody else
She means her tender songs for somebody else
And even when I have my arms around her

I know her thoughts are strong for somebody else
The hands I held belong to somebody else
I'll bet they're not so cold to somebody else
It's tough to be alone on the shelf
It's worse to fall in love by yourself

The one I love belongs to somebody else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else" by Isham Jones And His Orchestra depict a heart-wrenching situation where the singer is deeply in love with someone who is already committed to someone else. The song explores the painful reality of being in a one-sided love affair.

The opening line, "The one I love belongs to somebody else," sets the tone for the entire song, highlighting the unattainable nature of the singer's affection. Despite harboring strong feelings for this person, they are reminded time and again that their love is meant for someone else. The lyrics suggest that the person they love has dedicated their affectionate gestures and songs to another, emphasizing their emotional bond with someone other than the singer.

Even when the singer finds solace in holding their love interest, they are aware that the thoughts and emotions of their beloved are solely for someone else. The hands they hold, which should symbolize intimacy and connection, belong to another person who they presume treats them better. This realization leaves the singer feeling alone and abandoned, as they pine for the unrequited love they desire but cannot have.

Ultimately, the lyrics convey the sense of longing and heartache that accompanies loving someone who belongs to another. The singer's plea implies the difficulty of finding happiness when their heart is fully invested in someone who is unavailable.

Fantastic post.
Thank you for sharing this gem.

One of Isham's most famous and poignant compositions, this gem was later often taken at a more languid tempo, to emphasize the torch song quality in Kahn's lyrics. I doubt that the flappers and sheiks gave thought to the sad title when they danced to this early, peppy treatment.

I like the peppy treatment.

A fine version by the Jones combination. Now, Sinatra and Dorsey also cut a great dance version of this tune without emphasizing the torch song element of the lyrics.
