In Fiction
Isis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through fiction we saw the birth
Of futures yet to come.
Yet in fiction lay the bones,
Ugly in their nakedness.

Yet under this mortal sun,
We cannot hide ourselves.

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Isis's song "In Fiction" explores the concept of how fiction can be a catalyst for inspiring future innovation and invention. The lyrics suggest that through the imagination and creativity of authors and other artists, ideas and concepts can be introduced that eventually come to fruition in reality. However, the next line notes that while this creation may seem beautiful in the realm of fiction, in reality, it may not be so pretty. The phrase "ugly in their nakedness" suggests that the raw truth of something can be jarring or even offensive, but it is still a necessary component of the creative process.

The second verse brings the concept back down to earth, noting that no matter how much we may try to hide or disguise ourselves, we cannot truly conceal our true selves from the world. This could speak to the idea of the human condition, that we are all flawed and imperfect in our own ways, but that's what ultimately makes us relatable and interesting as characters in our own stories.

Line by Line Meaning

Through imagining a story, we visualized the origin
of events in the future that have not yet taken place.

But the groundwork of those events
were portrayed in a fictional tale.

And despite their exposed appearance,
the skeletal structure of the story was unappealing.

Still, within our limited lifetime,
we cannot shield ourselves from reality.
