(2) A Welsh Club production duo signed to Crazylegs.

(1) A progressive rock band from the 1970s which sounded pretty much like Canterbury. The band format included keys, sax, drums and vocals. The biggest influence for ISLAND definitely seems to be Van Der Graaf Generator, and the band certainly approaches high quality progressive rock from the darker end of the spectrum. Sometimes the influence of Gentle Giant gets very clear in their music.
(2) Group consisting of Alexia Bassiliou, Areti Kassapi Haralbidou, Aristos Moskovakis, Roger Lee and Doros Georgiadis. Only recorded their Eurovision entry as this collective

바이바이배드맨(이하 BBB)의 음악 한 가운데엔 늘 청춘이 있었다. 너도 나도 부르짖는 통에 이젠 좀 식상해져 버린 단어지만 그럼에도 불구하고 이들의 청춘은 유독 빛나 보였다. 그건 아마도 이들의 삶이 그 하고 많은 청춘의 한가운데 실재하고 있었기 때문이리라. 추억보정필터를 거치거나 억지로 박제된 것이 아닌, 끝 없이 분열하는 세포의 정기를 한 가득 머금고 사방천지로 지치는 줄도 모르고 뻗어나가는 젊음의 기운, 바로 그 한가운데였다.
스물 목전에 밴드를 결성하고, 그 밴드가 갓 돌을 지날 무렵부터 쌈지 페스티벌 숨은 고수, CJ 아지트 튠업 신인 아티스트, EBS 올해의 헬로루키 연말 대상, 한국 대중음악상 올해의 신인상 등 대한민국에 존재하는 상이라는 상은 모조리 휩쓴 것도 그 절절 끓는 기운의 덕이 컸다. 당시 세간은 오아시스나 라디오헤드 같은 대표적인 영국밴드들의 이름이나 매드체스터 사운드를 들먹였지만, BBB의 음악은 결국 BBB의 음악으로 남았다. 스타일이나 계보와는 상관 없이 튕기고 소리치고 뜀박질하는 젊은 기운이 가진 매력은 무엇보다 강한 힘을 가지고 있으니 말이다.
이런 BBB의 젊음의 가진 매력이 서서히 밴드의 중심축으로 자리하게 된 건 2013년 발표했던 EP [BECAUSE I WANT TO] 부터였다. 멤버들의 어린 시절과 그 시절 살았던 동네, 기억에 남아있는 장소 등을 직접 찾아 다니며 촬영한 사진으로 꾸민 앨범 커버는 레이블로부터의 독립 후 자체적으로 활동하겠다는 밴드의 패기와 맞물리며 꽤나 인상적인 순간을 남겼다. 독립의 결과로 제작 역시 최소한의 장비만을 사용한 홈 레코딩 방식을 택할 수 밖에 없었지만, 덕분에 우리는 거추장스러운 감투와 평가 아래 숨겨져 있던 BBB의 속내를 더 가깝게 만날 수 있었다.
한 번이 어렵지 두 번은 쉽다던가. BBB의 두 번째 정규앨범 [Authentic]은 그렇게 한 꺼풀 벗어 던진 자신들의 젊음을 분출하는 데 거침이 없다. 일반적이라면 ‘이전과 너무 다른 접근은 아닐까’ 조금쯤 눈치를 보았을 법도 하건만, 앨범의 첫 포문을 여는 ‘Young Wave’부터 느껴지는 ‘이것이 지금의 우리’라는 기세가 놀랍다. 블러와 프란츠 퍼디난드를 커버하던 밴드라고는 상상조차 할 수 없을 정도로 찬란히 쏟아져 내리는 섬세한 멜로디와 그루브의 색채. 기타를 잡은 록 밴드의 음악이라기 보다는 신서사이즈를 들이고 비트에 눈을 뜬 드림 팝 밴드의 작업처럼 느껴지는 이 곡이 이번 앨범의 시발점이라는 사실만으로 이미 많은 것이 추측 가능하리라.
