Itamar Assumpção was one of the biggest names and contributors in the Vanguarda Paulista ("São Paulo Vanguard/Avant-garde" in English), an alternative scene that dominated São Paulo in the very late 70s and the first half of the 80s. This movement united artists who operated involuntarily outside of the established commercial music industry during an era that pre-dated the Internet, the politics of downloading and the contemporary indie music scene. The "Vanguarda" was responsible for launching many new talents and establishing a foundation for autonomous, self-sufficient music production (and subsequent release) by artists such as Arrigo Barnabé and Grupo Rumo.

Tem que ter jeito pra coisa
Não vende em supermercado
Nem nos mercados das pulgas
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tanto faz uma ou uma dúzia
Precisa estar preparado
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tem que bolar uma fuga
Contar compasso quebrado
Cantar a bocca chiusa
Quem quer fazer boa música
Sabe a importância da pausa
Traído ou bem amado
Tem que forjar ferro gusa
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tem que entender quando cruza
Tem que ter muito cuidado
Juntar cigarra e saúva
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tem que ter cruz inclusa
Tem que ser médico e louco
Tem que aprender a fazer curva
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tem que encarar a medusa
Tem que passar o recado
Saber o que é hipotenusa
Quem quer fazer boa música
Tem que pisar ovos e uvas
Tem que obrigar o diabo
Sair debaixo da chuva
Quem quer fazer boa música
No coração vai ter dúvida
Tem que ter muito escutado
Às vezes viver de brisa
Quem quer fazer boa música
Dispensa coisa confusa
Além de tocar dobrado
Tem quer ter uma ou mais musas
Quem quer fazer boa música
Dispensa coisa confusa
Além de tocar dobrado
Tem quer ter uma ou mais musas

The lyrics of Itamar Assumpção's song "Variações" highlight the qualities and challenges of making good music. The song emphasizes the importance of talent and skill, suggesting that those who want to create good music must have the ability and inclination for it. The lyrics assert that good music cannot be found in supermarkets or flea markets, emphasizing that it is not a product that can be mass-produced or easily attained.
The lyrics also stress the need for preparation and perseverance in pursuing good music. Whether one creates just a single song or a dozen, it is crucial to be prepared to face the challenges that come with it. It involves understanding complex musical elements such as "semifusas" (semitones) and the ability to create intricate musical arrangements.
The lyrics further explore the creative process of making good music, emphasizing the importance of experimentation and embracing unconventional approaches. Itamar Assumpção suggests that one must be willing to break away from conventional musical structures and embrace musical experimentation, using techniques such as "fuga" (fugue) and "compasso quebrado" (irregular time signatures). The lyrics also highlight the significance of silence and pauses in music, as well as the ability to navigate through musical tensions and juxtapositions.
The lyrics continue to emphasize the necessary qualities of a musician, highlighting the importance of adaptability and versatility. Itamar Assumpção suggests that one must be able to navigate different musical genres and styles, such as bringing together the contrasting elements of a "cigarra" (cicada) and a "saúva" (leafcutter ant) in their music. The lyrics also metaphorically suggest that a musician must have a balance of different qualities and skills, including being both "médico e louco" (doctor and crazy), as well as being able to navigate unexpected turns and curves.
The lyrics further delve into the challenges and uncertainties that musicians face. Itamar Assumpção describes these in metaphoric terms, such as facing the mythical creature "medusa" and needing to pass on the message or meaning in their music. The lyrics also suggest that musicians must be willing to endure difficult circumstances and push through obstacles, as symbolized by making the devil leave and stepping out in the rain.
The last stanza of the song reflects on the internal struggles and doubts that musicians may experience. It highlights the importance of introspection and being receptive to different influences and experiences, even living in a "brisa" (breeze). The lyrics reiterate the importance of clarity and simplicity, avoiding confusion in one's music. Lastly, the mention of having one or more "musas" (muses) adds to the notion that good music often requires inspiration and a deep emotional connection.
In essence, "Variações" encourages musicians to approach their craft with talent, preparation, experimentation, adaptability, perseverance, and a deep connection to their artistic inspirations. The song acknowledges the challenges and uncertainties that come with creating good music but ultimately emphasizes the rewards and fulfillment that it can bring.
