Overall Meaning

The song "Movements" by J.A.B. is about the frustration and restlessness that comes with being in a stagnant relationship. Excellent demonstration Tony. I agree the 2 best punches in boxing are a consistent jab and hooks to the body. That normally wears them down enough to throw a few hard straights to finish them off

Great work, thank you for this one! The Jab is one of the most underestimated tools... especially beginners try to come up with fancy endless combos. Best thing that could happen is, that a real pro breaks it down: respect the basics and it´s a load of practice comming up with it

I appreciate that you took the time to explain why the jab is useful as a way of checking range and setting up combos. Simply knowing how to jab is not very helpful when you don't know why you should be doing it.

First of all, amazing videos by you Tony Jeffries. Thank you for teaching your ways! I have been wondering about how to properly do a step back jab if an opponent is coming at me quickly and say i wanted another option besides a pivot the left. When i jab and go backwards, am i punching first and then stepping back immediately with my back foot and then bring the lead foot back to finish the movement? Or am i stepping back with my back foot first and then doing the jab and lead foot movement at the same time?

Thanks for posting quality videos. I'm new to boxing and just started working the heavy bag(I figured why not learn to box during covid). The first thing I noticed when throwing combo's is that my jab looses power so quickly. Practice practice I will.

Tony, I’ve just started with the double end bag and have an issue. When I miss-time a fast hard jab, and the bag is moving away and I miss it, I over extend my arm often and it hurts. Apart from improving my timing, what do I do about this? Do I flick the jab out but always hold it back a little from full extension so that if I miss I don’t over extend? Cheers.

I had no experience at all in boxing. I started watching your videos. Now I have others asking me for advice. The only advice I can really give with confidence is telling them to watch your videos. I really love the one that said something like "Look like a pro when hitting the heavy bag" Once I started using the information on that video, I really got a lot of compliments some even thought I was a pro boxer. LOL Thanks Tony because of you I am getting better and better. Oh! did I mention the girls said they really like my moves LOL. Again, Big thank you, Tony, you're the best!!!!!!

I always thought of my jab like a snake striking out. Elbow down, extend and retract. Telegraphing the jab with the elbow is the most important thing to work on from my experience.

@Eric Rood the jab is never going to be as powerful as a rear handed punch because the hips are not involved so be patient. Practice and form will only lead to improve. Poor technique will only compensate for weaknesses.

Hiya Tony! I'm 64 years old. Last time I boxed I was a young man. I was fairly good. But now we're 42 years on ... For decades I was - and remain - a power lifter. Every couple of years I recover one of lifting's holy grails, namely I bench press a little more than twice my body weight. So I retain a fair measure of the strength I once had. But, as you can readily imagine, my catalogue of injuries is extensive. Also, of course, there's routine wear - and tear. Very recently I've returned to my youthful joy of boxing. Here's the question: any advice on how a man my age should proceed? For example: I can hardly follow your encouragement in this video to practice my jab so assiduously. I've a superb boxing trainer, but a man who hums that Beatle's song (no prize for guessing which one) can use all the help he can get. Finally, are you in LA? I use to be an Amateur boxer and I would use a a power jab in which I would kind of bend slightly in the knees and then leap forward and twist my torso while I threw the jab so that I was completely bladed and it was so powerful that I had some opponents and sparring partners tell me that it was just as powerful as any right or left hand straight cross that they had ever felt.

I must say I utilise the jab and lead hook the most as my most used punches as a southpaw and to hell establish that jab land it more frequently and frustrate my opponents before setting up the left hand the speed jab the tony was talking about where you have the lead hand floating around your face closer to the opponent is a phenomenal punch and if you have good reflexes and speed you couple those with that short distance and speedy jab it will be blindingly quick and can be landed almost at will against people. It is brilliant as an almost preemptive counter as soon as your opponent makes a move ot shows a minor telegraphing of their intentions that speed jab or similarly a speedy lead hook can stop them dead in their tracks before they can launch their attack, the lead hook works particularly well when used from a southpaw stance against an orthodox fighter when holding the hand out slightly it allows time to defend or more efficiently parry an orthodox lead punch and the lack of space between your lead hand and your opponents lead side is so small it's nearly.impossible for them to defend against it if theyve lowered their guard even for a second

@Tony Jeffries sometimes, but it really depends on what is open to me, there are times I sort of half feint the jab turning it into a short looping hook nearer the end of the punch to trick the opponent to move to the outside of the jab but they will actually move into the hook. Most times though its ine or the other as a counter punch which will set me up for the straight left or body punch and then an uppercut or left hook etc...

Ive been working on my jab a lot, and your videos are helping me out a lot. IDk if its because I have a MMA background but when i step to throw my jab I am picking my lead foot up then forward, and I think that is slowing my jab speed down. I need to step forward first and not pick my foot up then forward, maybe I am trying to get more power..IDK...anything I can do to work on this? Thanks man, youre the best

A lot of people focus on pushing the job out but not on bringing it back again at speed. They tend to not know where their hand is after they have landed.

We always use to train with the other hand blocking a punch to the face or side of head with other hand to build in memory muscle to expect a counter

When I'm throwing Jabs in the air, I always feel a sudden burst on tension near the end of the punch. Is it because there's no bag to absorb the force?

Yes, it's part of the answer. You should be aware of overextending your arm so dont throw the jab, use it more like a whip. As you Land the shot on the imaginary Target, pull it back instantly. Otherwise, you will overextend your arm slightly and thats why you feel that burst, I had this Problem too mate

To be a lion you must train with lions

if you see the punch coming you can take it, that is if you use to being hit if not spar spar and spar the best way to get fit to fight as your training to fight in the ring is spar spar spar !!! , but still run. go on punch bag and skip .if You see the punch you can become kind of punch resistance as you body is ready to take it subconsciously ether by riding the punch ie rolling with the force or just gritting ur teeth and taking it , its the punch you dont see that knocks you out , Also the size of the gloves makes a big difference ..

one cool variation is to bring your rear shoulder forward like you’re throwing a cross and since your shoulder is forward your left is loaded for you to step in and throw a hard ass jab

What about the "splitting the difference" jab, that is, landing just before your foot touches the canvas? Tyson Fury destroyed Wilder with that jab. It really puts off the opponent since it's so unpredictable.

had or have it since 3 years. doesn't feel that painful anymore since like 5 months but i still feel it for example when i go to the gym. so i cut gym out for now, im only doing body exercises at home. additionally i train boxing 4 times a week and when ive got time maybe 2 times bjj. exercises which helped me the most are push ups, core exercises like plank and hammer curls with a stretch band (thera band). also i wear bracelets from epipoint on my forearms. also youve gotta stretch 3 times a week!!!!!! the whole body!!! i fo 1 hour stretching 3 times a week (in 1 hour i stretch both, upper and under body). and stretch your forearms everyday!!! helped me the most... search for stretches on youtube or google. maybe also get a foamroller but tbh i dont use it that much. and for boxing classes: warm up your forearms with light exercise, rotating and short stretching

I use to be crap with my left but after years of practice I am very good with my left also now and have knocked more people up the floor with my left. I'm not even a boxer really, did go for a few years when I was a little kid. mainly self taught though. No man so far has been able to stand toe to toe with me in a street fight.

@Tony Jeffries I damaged my right hand for a while so I was just using my left for weeks. At first using my left felt odd & like it was stupid compared to using my right. Now my left hand jab is more like a full on power punch. I can really pack the weight & power into it too. The other thing I done often was punching them punch machine down at the arcades. I just kept on trying to get better score using my left instead. My right hand shot is still my best but my left hand arcade machine shot nearly matches my right now. Anyways I watched ya fight video's & thought you was brilliant, you are a very good boxer. You have a very good jab on ya :)

Drills where you jab and as soon as you hit the mit the trainer returns from the same side you jabbed off of, shadowboxing with light weights, alot of rear deltoid work, and lastly the discipline to stand in a mirror and jab and honestly critique it, day after day until it looks better.

Step in. Your foot should step in while your arm is extending. Don’t over do the step and be light on the foot. Practice jabbing stepping back or to the side using each foot too

I have a question for you Mr Jeffries. Why do you think boxers forget to throw their jab, I see this ALL the time in professional fights. They either stop throwing the jab or they rarely use it. Seen a lot of fights lost which could have been an easy win if they used it. THanks!

This is a bit difficult to answer mate as boxers have different styles. Maybe the opponent got a counter for their jabs but I do not think that they forgot to jab

Practicing the jab is essential but don't forget to train your body too. Without strong body, no matter how good your jab is, you will not last long in a fight.
