When I was a child in the 70's, downtown Jacksonville FL had all of these massive department stores close to each other. We would go downtown on Saturdays and go through a lot of them. By the 80's those places were gone and moved to the malls. I always liked downtown better. Now I think malls are dying because of Walmart and Amazon.

Lived in Jacksonville FL from 1990-2000, for about a year or so off Southside Blvd near Phillips Hwy near the Avenue’s Mall. Loved the downtown/Landing area, very beautiful.

Well Frank when corporations were/are allowed to rape the masses financially while depriving its citizens of basics you reap what you sow. The past was not glorious. Part of the Golden Rule James Cash Penney endorsed was paying its employees a poverty wage while expecting them to dress for the wealthy they served. No one of color allowed in. I could go on but you get it. Nothing Golden about this era. ☮️❤️

Back then, that’s what, I loved growing up in the 70s the stores literally served there customers, even something rare now even with local down town shops in your own city. The people running it took the time to stop what they were doing and treated you like you were the most important person that graced there store.

Customer service like that is instinct. Not sure if a man was the one who helped you out but now it seems like everything customer service is run by women and not that it’s bad but overall it sucks. There’s no balance...

Ps. Sweet example because young men aren’t having coming of age experiences anymore or having them post adulthood and it’s pretty depressing.

@Captain America America Those JC Penny batteries were manufactured by OPTIMA (Gel Cell )..I only had one replaced in 1999 by Firestone (which was Pennys auto center before they dropped that dept. I have that battery in my 1959 Chevy 1/2 ton 292 straight six👍

The pandemic has really done a number on J.C. Penney. But even before then, the last decade hasn't been kind. I bought the sofa in my living room in the Penney's furniture department (no longer there) in Westminster CA in early 2012. At that time the company was still flush with cash but poor management decisions to eliminate sale prices helped drive away business. I need to buy some clothes and was planning on going to Target but then saw this video, so I'm going to relive old times and go to the store in Lakewood CA, closest to my home. Wish me luck! Last time I was there it was pretty depressing.

Thanks for the video. Many people will criticize J.C. Penney’s but they employed a lot of Americans with good paying jobs. My mom worked there in the 60’s and early 70’s. Penney’s tried hard to compete with Sears and actually did very well. Their prices were affordable and the quality was good. You got your money’s worth. American companies, American employees selling products made in America by Americans. We may never see that again. Times were good for almost everyone ( no doubt someone will disagree, but if you weren’t alive back then you just don’t know) Bad upper management has ruined so many American companies and destroyed the jobs of millions. In the future we will all work for Amazon or Facebook and eat at Taco Bell or McDonalds and watch videos of once great American companies and restaurants.

I don't lament the loss of department stores or shopping malls. "Times were good" is a relative opinion; there were plenty of recessions from the 1950s into the 1990s. A lot of people worked factory jobs that had regular/seasonal layoffs/furloughs. The middle class took a big hit during the Reagan years. Why did Penney's fall on hard times? The answer is free-market capitalism. People have choices and no longer choose Penney's, Sears, K-Mart, etc.

Summer of 1973 I worked as a Janitor in JC Penney store at Southcenter Mall in WA state. Used the money to buy a 69VW Bug for college. It took 4 hours for a team of 4 people to sweep, vacuum, and clean the rest rooms for both of the 2 sale floors. In 1978 I bought my first couch at Penney's after getting my first credit card...from Penney's. So yea it has been part of my life.

I worked for JCP for 22 and a half years.... we had a fellow come in one year... with a lifetime battery, long after the auto parts dept was gone... we had to go to a Sears store and get a battery to honor the guarantee ... grin.. All in all it was a good place to work.... I say all in all... but in the later years, the big cheese were more interested in profit over people....including its customers. Well, its all but history now.. Keep smilin.

I wore a lot of Penneys clothes growing up. It's where working class families shopped in the 1960s and 70s when your parents didn't spring for the extra money for Levi's. But Penneys had nice cords that were identical.

@jeff silverman Like everything else, that area has changed over time. There's a casino just a couple of miles from Millerton and a lot of higher-end housing development in the area around the lake as well. The road to Friant had to be widened and improved because of the increase traffic.

I was thinking the same thing since Sears and Wards both were built on catalog sales. They even sold house kits. It should have been a no-brainer for them to dominate online sales. They had the brand name advantage with people knowing their reputation. They should have picked up on that when Amazon was still primarily selling books.

I worked in a mall location PT for about 4 years in the early 80s and still fondly remember it. It was at that time a full line, fully staffed store. Mall culture was at its zenith during that time and it was such a fun place to be, working or not, like an enclosed city unto itself. It was a nice place to work and I had nice co workers and friends. I loved to eat their restaurant food on my breaks and shopping trips, and they helped this then young adult keep a rather dubious car moving more than once. Their electronics were great and I also bought furniture for my first apt. there. I've continued shopping with them semi regularly through the years and am still a cardholder who makes occasional online purchases.

There was a really enjoyable JC Penney in San Jose where I grew up that was fun to shop in when an older family member could drive me there! In their candy department I actually tried cinnamon bears for the first time. Those being the predecessors to Gummies! By the time I moved to San Francisco in 1990 there were no Penney's locations up here anymore.

Thank you! This more detailed version is excellent! I loved the Penney's of the Funky P era, they were always my choice over Sears. We had a small suburban Penney's in the 60s, in 1969 a large regional mall opened with a full service version and we all loved it.

My aunt worked in the small store for many years. If we wanted to make a big purchase, she would do it and we would get her employee discount!

I have purchased most of my clothes from JC Penney for the last 30+ years. We still have one at one of the last shopping malls in the Kansas City area (Oak Park Mall). I am not sure how long they will be able to last. Sad to see them go.

As a kid in the 70s/80s, I fondly remember the thick catalogs my mom kept from Sears, JC Penney, and Wards... What was not in the store, she would order. We did not have a lot of money, so this was one place she would take us for clothes. Locally, we lost our JC Penney in about the mid 90s. The old 50s style building remains relatively unchanged, but is a furniture store now. In the early 80s, the older stand alone JC Penney and Sears mega stores were shut down in some locations of San Diego and Los Angeles as the malls became the new centers of shopping.

There's a Pennys still operating in Plainfield Indiana. The exterior reflects popular architectural design of the 80s but once you enter the store it's like stepping back in time. It reminds me of the way department stores used to look. It's a beautiful store and I hope it remains open.

The last time I was at a Penney was 2 years ago and the service was pathetic! The people working there looked like teenagers, untrained, unprofessional and took no pride in anything. I made no purchase and vowed to never go back. Then I heard a few months later the store was closing!😜 This is what happens when you allow fools to run your shop along with selling overpriced foreign made products. Definatly was not the same store most of us grew up with. Hell not even the same country most of us grew up in.

It should be noted that JCP has been bought out of bankruptcy by a group headed by Simon (the large owner/operator of malls). It was thought that keeping them as an anchor would help keep their properties afloat. Time will tell if that was the correct path to take under the circumstances.

So sad to hear they're closing. During the 80s and into the 90s I bought just about all my family's clothes there. In the late 90s, the store really changed it's quality of clothing in our area, lesser quality, but I know it was due to consumer inability to pay for better quality. As a teenager, l absolutely loved JC Penney’s! I still remember the very first article of clothing I paid for entirely by myself at age 14 (1974) with my babysitting money. A multicolored mock turtleneck Minidress for $12.49. I wouldn’t wear it until I had saved enough money to buy a pair of “Patent Leather White Go-Go Boots! I’m giggling now but it was quite fashionable back in the day! I couldn’t wait until l turned 18 so l’m could apply for my first Credit Card. Which was denied, thank you JC Penney. I was finally approved when I was 20yo and I had already gotten a credit card from Sears.

Interesting info on JCP here, great video, as always. Bought my first set of custom wheels for my 1983 Pontiac Firebird at the JCP auto center Edison Mall location in Fort Myers Florida back in 1986. Great memories! Years later in the early 2000’s we had a stand alone JCP in of all places Hiram GA about 30 miles NW of Atlanta. Great store. Thinking it’s closed now unfortunately..

I worked for J.C. Penny as a credit collector in the IBM building in downtown Chicago way back in 1979. If you were around then and were a number of months behind on paying your J.C. Penny credit card, maybe you got a phone call from me basically asking, "where's the money?"

I worked for JC Penney for 30 yrs. It's so sad what it's become. No more customer service, stores are ugly and run down, terrible merchandise.

One J.C. Penney store here in New Port Richey closed three Years ago and has since turned into A part apartment complex. It was a mall and is still a mostly mall complex.It was owned by Simon Malls. It is still open despite its descent into failure.

On holiday in the US in 1986 I bought six collarless shirts from JC Penney. They are of superlative quality and look just as good now as they did then. I remember the date because in the menswear department the staff were setting up a display of new merchandise. The display was for Tommy Hilfiger. I looked at it and decided that it was very down-market tat and that I'd stick with my Penny's own brand shirts. I'm so glad that I did as I wouldn't imagine that the Hilfiger rubbish would had lasted so long or worn so well.

In the 80s, Orange Park Mall (Orange Park, FL) had a J.C. Pennies anchor store.
I bought most clothes there. A specialty clothing store in Orange Park for most shirts.
Pennies, like most big names retails of 70s -80s, had really helpful and friendly workers.

Just purchased a suit at JC Penney here in Little Rock a couple of weeks ago. I suppose because of Covid, there were no salesclerks at any registers in their departments. My brother and I were literally walking throughout the store shouting "Hello" until someone said that you had to go to customer service to pay. BTW, after sales price and discounts, my suit that was well over $200.00 costed me around $140.00. I guess I'm old school, but I love bargains!

I worked at Penny's in Lafayette la. In the early 70's. Good times. Loved my job in the stock room. Did customer carry outs sometimes. Never forget bringing a lounge chair down to the loading dock . The customer was driving a VW bug. He had to go get a bigger vehicle. We were a full line store back then. I have forgotten the names of most of the people I worked with. Its a shame that JC Penny, Montgomery Wards, Sears, KMart and other anchors of retail have or will be found in the dust bin of history. Far too many CEO's are paid handsome salaries and bonuses even if the company loses millions and billions.

Rest assured that Wal-Mart, Sam's, Costco and others that are on top will soon go the way of JC Penny's and others..

My parents shopped there, and I shopped there when earning money. Bought 45s at their music section and sewing supplies. Bought clothes for my children...until I became aware of sweatshops and refused to buy their sweatshop clothes. Had a shouting match with my daughter because she wanted the clothes. Had a long history with them and when I fell on hard times, they got real nasty about bill overdue. Sad ending for a loyal customer

My mom used to work for the US Shoe factory, shoes that went to JC Penny’s and Sears, and all the other stores and, a lot of our shoes came from way of the shoe factory cause, my mom got a hefty discount. I also with supervision made regular visits when, she was working there and of course quite a few of my relatives worked there. With supervision, I learn to do the machines my mom had worked.

Our JC Penney closed in past 3 years, sure miss their Stafford line of menswear in Men's Department, many great dress shirts and great suits at reasonable prices & made to last

I still have at least 10 Stafford dress shirts - really cool vibrant colors, plus white ones and multiple Stafford suits and even ties. I remember after I bought them 10 years ago one of the ladies at work joked with me saying I was like a pack of Starburst never knew what color shirt I would wear haha

However your history is just slightly incomplete. Before the steep decline JCP had a CEO THAT CHANGED THEIR ENTIRE PRICING system. Using “color coded SQUARES!!!” It was convoluted and confusing. Not to mention the went WOKE in their advertising before woke was a thing. It is really a sad tale of bad bad BAD leadership... ty again for your content!

4:00 I remember when hardly no one even used credit cards to buy anything, and this was in the 70s. People used cash, and you would see people writing checks at the checkout instead of credit cards.

Most of my clothes are from JCP, and our mall store is always busy when I go there. I do miss the catalogs of the day from JCP, Sears and Montgomery Ward.

I live in Detroit, Michigan and I remember J.C.Penney. When, the Eastland Mall being enclosed, and J.C.Penney was added as an anchor Department Store. I would do my shopping at J.C.Penney and I would also have my hair done at the J.C.Penney Beauty Shop in J.C.Penney when perms were popular for men. I would also order clothing from the J.C.Penney Catalog. I also remember when J.C.Penney closed the store permanently.
Then, the J.C.Penney building became a Sear's store and Sear's closed the store permanently. To this very day the J.C.Penney/Sear's building remains abandoned. I used to work at Hudson's at Eastland Mall. Hudson's is now Macy's and Macy's closed the Eastland Mall store permanently. The Macy's building is also abandoned, and the Eastland Mall is a ghost mall. Even the city busses don't stop at Eastland Mall.
P.S.,
The Eastland Mall was enclosed in 1975, and the Northland Mall was enclosed in 1974 and J.C.Penney was also an Department Store anchor for the Northland Mall. From, what I heard is a church owns the Northland Mall J.C.Penney and the Hudson's Northland Mall store has also became Macy's and Macy's has closed the Northland Mall store permanently.

@Bob Mackay After, when Hudson's was bought out by Marshall Field's of Chicago and I got laid off. I took the summer off and I went to Montgomery Wards at Gratiot and Seven Mile and I worked for 5 years. When, Sear's announced that they were closing there inner city stores located on Grand River and Oakman,and Gratiot and Van Dyke stores. Montgomery Wards did the same. Montgomery Wards closed the Grand River and Greenfield and the Gratiot and Seven Mile store permanently. Gratiot and Seven Mile was my old store. I was born in Detroit and I was living in the Seven Mile and Gratiot area. Then, I went on my own in 1975, and I lived in the Gratiot and McNichols area. I even remember the Ramona Theater on the corner of Gratiot and McNichols. The area used to be called Little Italy and now it is Little Ghetto.
They to bring back chain stores to the Gratiot and Seven Mile but Kroger and Walgreens but they closed there stores permanently.
P.S.,
Even the city busses have stopped going into Eastland Mall.

My family and I went shopping at the Eastland Mall all of the time. We lived 1 mile away from Eastland. I don`t think Eastland will last much longer, sadly it will probably be torn down like the Northland Mall. Eastland is in a rough area now. I remember shopping at the 7 Mile and Gratiot shopping area growing up too over near you lived Mr.Squires. It bothers me to see where I grew up in the in the 1960s and 70s that was a nice area look so horribly bad now.

Our go to store in the 50's and 60's for clothes they also were the supplier for the Boy Scouts, we used Sears for almost all other items, both Sears and Penny's dropped the ball as they were made for the internet.....

Fun fact... the first HOME DEPOT in the world (which opened in Atlanta in 1979) was a former JCPenney Outlet Store building! Also, both CVS and Rite Aid (also perhaps Walgreens today because they bought a lot of Rite Aid stores?) accept JCPenney credit cards... because both CVS and Rite Aid bought a large number of ECKERD drugstores which had been owned by JCPenney. And lots of those Eckerd stores had been either THRIFT DRUG or FAY'S drugstores originally. Both of those chains were owned by JCPenney before the Eckerd chain was sold to JCPenney. So there are some Walgreens stores today which have been FOUR drugstore chains over the decades... either Thrift Drug OR Fay's, then Eckerd, then Rite Aid, and finally Walgreens! And they actually also were Brooks Pharmacy stores (but NOT with the Brooks name) for a few years after JCPenney sold Eckerd to Brooks and before Brooks/Eckerd was sold to Rite Aid!

...being a late boomer baby (class of '54) and growing up in Wyoming's Capital City of Cheyenne...our local downtown J.C. Penney store was a fixture of my growing-up years...it was in a building which the company had updated with solid concrete slabs covering all of the original building's windows above the street level...giving the image of a 5-story "solid cube"...it was the first store in town to feature escalators in the 1950's; and was always on the "cuttin edge"...

...managed by the father of my school classmate, Jon Svenson, this venerable location; along with the newer "mall style" Montgomery Ward store on the east side of town were THE two shopping locations for all of Cheyenne's 40,000 residents...and I well recall the pride of place that their mail order catalogues would take on our family coffee table...and, as with Montgomery Ward, a substantial share off the income generated at the Cheyenne store came from catalog orders, which most folks placed directly at the store while they were shopping for other items...with a smart looking on-floor kiosk, separate and apart from the credit and general offices area...

...and while our downtown location DID have an appliance section, unlike Wards, it didn't have an auto service center or products designed for lawn and garden care...it DID, however boast the widest selection of clothing items in the region' and I remember proudly riding my Schwinn bicycle to the store to purchase a pair of (appropriately..) penny loafers which I had to pay for from my weekly allowances...those, combined with a stylin' pair of white Levi slacks, and a new yellow short sleeved shirt with matching socks...and yours truly was "off to the height of fashion races..."...

...and though the 1980's DID give Penney's management significant challenges between sky-high interest rates and significantly higher transportation costs; it is a pity that the Senior Management Team in New York apparently failed to lead by James Cash Penney's example; and to significantly reign in expenses (...and forgo salary increases and stock bonuses??) to ensure the long-term viability of their company...yes, that successful, ethical man who founded the first store in the western Wyoming sheep farming and ranching town of Kemmerer would surely have had a few choice words...the Golden Rule itself...

They didn't lose out to inflation in the 80s it wasn't that bad what happened is the neighborhoods that the shopping malls were in change from predominantly white to Black and Hispanic crime went up and so did theft. Just about every major shopping mall in Houston has shut down due to high crime.
