Cocaine
J.J. Cale feat. Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you want to hang out,
You've got to take her out, cocaine
If you want to get down,
Get down on the ground, cocaine
She don't lie,
She don't lie,
She don't lie, cocaine
If you got bad news,
You want to kick them blues, cocaine
When your day is done
And you got to run, cocaine
She don't lie,
She don't lie,
She don't lie, cocaine

If your thing is gone
And you want to ride on, cocaine
Don't forget this fact,
You can't get it back, cocaine
She don't lie,

She don't lie,
She don't lie, cocaine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cocaine" by J.J. Cale feat. Leon Russell are quite straightforward and to the point - if you want to hang out or get down, cocaine is the way to go. Cocaine is portrayed in the song as a fix-all solution for anyone looking to escape reality or cope with their problems. The repeated line "She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie, cocaine" emphasizes the idea that cocaine is a dependable source of relief, and perhaps even a companion of sorts.

The second verse of the song highlights the idea of using cocaine as a way to escape bad news or the blues, while the third verse suggests using it as a way to deal with loss or difficult situations. The line "You can't get it back, cocaine" speaks to the addictive nature of the drug and the fact that once you start, it's hard to stop.

While some may interpret the song as simply glorifying drug use, others might argue that it's a cautionary tale about the dangerous, all-consuming nature of addiction. Either way, the lyrics are undeniably catchy and have made "Cocaine" a classic rock staple.

Years ago..I am guessing mid 70s an ad showed in a local paper: Leon Russell in town doing a gig.. at a local club in DC. We went and there he was..very small crowd. I was in total awe. The venue was so small that some people actually got up and danced. just unreal. those were really the good old days at least for our generation.

I'm totally agree with you

@ChuckECheeez

I saw Leon Russell at a small-ish club of like 3-400 ppl about 6 months before he died. Even in old age- one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
