Help
J.Lennon & P.Mc Cartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I tried so hard to settle down
But the angel of destruction keeps on houndin' me all around
But I know in my heart
The leaves are shining in the sun
That we never really parted
Oh no, oh, help me, lord
Oh, help me, lord
Please, help me, lord, yeah, yeah
Help me to help myself
Help me to help myself

They say the lord helps those who helps themselves
So I'm asking this question in the hope that you'll be kind
'Cause I know deep inside
The leaves are shining in the sun
I was never satisfied
Oh no, oh, help me, lord
Please, help me, lord, yeah, yeah

Help me to help myself
Help me to help myself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Help" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney reflect an internal struggle for help and self-improvement. The opening lines, "Well, I tried so hard to settle down, but the angel of destruction keeps on houndin' me all around," suggest a desire for stability and peace but being constantly faced with obstacles. The repetition of "help me, lord" and "help me to help myself" throughout the song emphasizes the need for external and internal assistance in achieving personal growth.

The lines "They say the lord helps those who helps themselves, so I'm asking this question in the hope that you'll be kind" tie in the religious theme and suggest a plea for divine intervention in achieving self-improvement. The repeated phrase "The leaves are shining in the sun" adds a hopeful tone, suggesting that growth and positivity is still possible despite the struggles faced.

Overall, "Help" is a powerful and introspective song that delves into the complexities of personal growth and the need for help and guidance along the way.
