I forgot about this! Late-night hyperfocus can be wild.

After some (slightly more lucid) thought, a horror-genre Twilight could include themes/aspects of:

Story 1:
Isolation: The physical seperation of Bella from her friends, mother, home and access to mental health services in a small town. As a sheriff, Charlie works long hours and nights, leaving Bella in a state of intense anxiety. Being used to the noise and light pollution of the city; the silence of the woods disturbs her. Every noise from the trees and the wildlife are amplified. Every shadow from the dark house is deep and elongated, and seems to shift in the corner of her eye...

Alienation and gaslighting: News of her stay in a psych ward spreads quickly in the small town, the community is wary of her. Any claims of stalking or supernatural occurances by her are immediately dismissed, and only serve to alienate her further.

Stalking: As her delusion grows, the feeling of being followed grows relentless. Bella no longer feels safe at school, in her own home, and even in her bedroom she feels that she is being watched.

Story 2:
False accusations: Leaning into the fear that many men have felt. As Bella's off-handed comments grow into darker accusations, the community shun Edward and the other boys eventually turn on him. No one calls an ambulance for an abuser.

Neither of them:
Weresimp falling for a newborn baby. That sh is too horrifying.

Edit: Maybe keep the CGI baby for nightmare fuel.

Oh God so many memories from Middle School, High School, and being with my ex are coming back to me.

I did skip New Moon and Eclipse because I never watched those and never cared for them.

This is embarrassing to admit but one time in 9th grade, or freshman year or whatever...don't question the Mexican school grade system...just look it up...I remember my English teacher made us watch the first Twilight movie for an assignment...I think to describe what happened in the end of the movie or whatever...I dunno I don't remember.

And yes I remember all those girl teenagers making the whole "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" BS...yeah teenage girls during the late 2000s and really early 2010s were just...weird about celebrities like this at the time...heck I remember a friend of mine telling me how hot Jacob was at the time. I never cared for these movies and was mostly reserved in school.

And well I never watched the first Breaking Dawn movie. However, I did watch the 2nd Breaking Dawn movie...with my ex boyfriend...and it was his idea...yeeeeah....I didn't like it...

But you are right though...A BUNCH OF NOTHING HAPPENS!

I always read that the reason why people have reflections is because it's reflecting our souls back at us, and the reason why vampires don't cast a reflection is because they don't have sould (because unread, their soul has already departed) but can temporarily cast a reflection if they've recently fed and thus has temporarily stolen a soul.
ETA: it's the whole reason people were superstitious about cameras stealing a person's soul, and that talking on the phone will invite possession by the devil. 🤔

In other stories there are reasons why someone might not want to be a vampire. In Twilight there is literally none. You are practically immortal, sunlight doesn't harm you and you can get by simply by drinking some animal blood once in a while. You wouldn't even need to go hunting like they do because you could just get some fresh animal blood from the local butchers and be done with it.

So Rosalie complaining about it when the alternative was death really comes across as a very weak personal conflict. You can't have babies when you're dead either after all. Honestly with how infrequently they need to feed life is actually more convenient since you'd just have to order blood like once a week and drink some and not worry about having to cook breakfast lunch and dinner the rest of the week.

Reminds me of a book series called Soulless by Gail Carriger, where a woman was born with a preternatural ability to tempoarily turn off supernatural powers via touch for an extended period of time, like turning vampires and werewolves back into regular humans.
Some supernaturals saw her as a threat and a group of humans saw her as a tool to be experimented on and used against supernaturals.
Makes me wish Twilight had been smart enough to do something similar. Anyway, go read Soulless, very good book series.

Okay so... I was reading the books long time ago (don't judge, I was 13 or. 14 then) and as I remember Bella had some sort of natural "shield" that was protecting her from other vampire powers that were ONLY "mental" type of powers. If someone with super strength was out to kill her they would do it just like that. All powers that were physical or were affecting the world physically should work on her. Still it creates plot hole where Jasper (emotion manipulation powers) juse used his gift on her to calm her down - IT Doesn't make any sense 💀 but it's S. Mayer, what would I expect
That was the general idea of Bella's powers origin but it was only introduced in the last book so probably author made this up as she wrote it

Twilight could have been an amazing horror film; a psychological horror story of an isolated young woman suffering delusions of being stalked by a "vampire". She could have been released from the mental ward into Charlie's care and been to scared of going back there that she doesn't tell him about her hallucinations.

Or from Edward's perspective: a girl shows up in his town, goes to his classes and follows him around. Things turn dark when he starts seeing her everywhere and she starts accusing him of being a vampire. For some reason, everyone in the town seems to like her despite her having the looks and personality of a bowl of stale oatmeal, so no one believes him when he confides in them what she has been up to.
You could add her s**cidal recklessness from the second film into the mix: if she dies, he'll be implicated. But she is hell-bent on having him "save" her.

My little sister was OBSESSED with this series. My mom got into too (because she’s the one who took her to the movies to see it) but I’d always go long because I like free movies and popcorn and I’d make fun of it the whole time, just to piss off my little sister. The twist in the last movie was SO hilarious in theaters. I was laughing my ass off and the whole theater (including my mom and sister) were coping and trying to rationalize what they were seeing. I can remember my mom repeating “this didn’t happen in the book!?” There was a very loud and audible gasp from the theater 😂 when it turned out to be a dream a lot of people were mad, but I think it’s the best scene in the whole movie. To see some of the main cast die, it was just too funny.

I don't know if you are still interested in a reply after so long, but I guess I can just put it out there: Alice'spowers work just fine on Bella, she can see her future without a problem. The only times she cannot predict Bella's future is when a werewolf is around because she cannot see those. Other vampiric powers work on Bella as well as long as it is not a purely mental power. Mind-reading does not work on her, the illusion stuff does not work, and the mental pain attack does not work. Looking into her future or having her emotions controlled works just fine.

The elemental guy for sure, Alice and Jasper, of course. I also think she can be tracked and lie detection works on her. There ought to be others, but I can't remember. I started the first book to have a common topic with one of my relatives, so I read it in Hungarian. Gave it a try in German and could not read that past page 30. The Englisch one I only tried the midnight sun one and it was....not that good? I think the translators to Hungarian took some creative liberties as some are prone to do, and made the series enjoyable.

It’s because kids/young teens don’t have higher-order critical thinking skills yet. We all fell into some trap when we were younger liking something that was objectively “bad”, or making logical fallacies everywhere when we tried to argue with someone. Nah the books make it pretty clear imprinting is about finding a mate. Jacob is totally grooming the baby and in the books there's an example of a werewolf taking care of a 5 year old who's going to marry her once she's legal. It's weird and gross as it sounds.

Yoooo I didn't expect a twilight review, much less one from JAR! This will be fun to watch over dinner.
Also, throwing in my 3 cents about twilight that I just realized;
The vampires' powersets aren't really vampiric whatsoever, if anything they're incubi/succubi maybe?(I vaguely recall something about how all them were super attractive or something) If it wasn't for the bloodlust I'd probably think they were. That's probably why I always thought the werewolves were better, they actually resembled their namesake, even if they had voluntary shapeshifting(? I think they did, I just remember reading reviews I never saw it)

I just want to point out that the Renesmee & Jacob plot could be worse (somehow it is possible 🥲) imagine that Bella did chose Jacob...and then they had a kid... I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. Idk how these movies managed to be worse than just bad writing and effects, but also making a a main character a groomer with no consequence or punishment(or even the fact that this element is canon to the series). Yes, in the novel and film adaptions, Dracula tries to seduce his victims.
Also, at least for me, it's the gentlemanly or mysterious side of vampires that always gets me lmao. It's why I don't care for most modern setting vampire stories cuz they act like everyone else, except they have a diet issue lol.
Some people are attracted to 100% evil vampires though. See the massive fanbase for diabolik lovers to see how much people will adore awful people.

I was sort of forced to watch these movies due to my mother’s then current roommate and the way the house is set up, and I for the life of me cannot tell you the plot of most of them despite watching ALL OF THEM. REPEATEDLY. All I can recall are specific scenes that are completely disconnected from the plot

I remember getting into twilight from the books. I had gotten into reading vampire books after reading Fledgling by Octavia Butler, and was looking for another vampire read. So a girl in my class told me about twilight. I had gotten the books on audiobook and I enjoyed it, except book 3, and I thought book 4 was alright, except the part with Jacob imprinting.

To me each time I read the next series I expected something better to what I actually got.

The movie I was excited for. I thought Robert Patterson was perfect casting. When I saw the movie, that I was excited to see, I was bored. I never saw the other two in theaters except Breaking dawn part 1.

I'll say that the twilight movies did give a lot of funny parodies. So that's a plus.

You know what… after seeing AMC’s Interview with a Vampire the show, and Dracula the mini series… Twilight is really not that bad. Original work and characters, marketing that didn’t involve preemptive strikes against fans, an author that pretty much wrote professional level fan fiction and sold it to millions of people and a studio, you know what that’s impressive: Twilight 10/10.

I was excited but they looked like they weren’t really made for kids, so I never read them. The first Twilight movie had a really great moment in it that no one ever gives it credit for. The moment where Bella is trying to push Charlie away so he wouldn’t miss her if she died. She resorts to saying the same thing Renee said to Charlie before the divorce. This hurts Charlie deeply and Bella reflects on that in the truck, explaining how she feels awful for being so hurtful to her own father. If we got more moments like that, Twilight could’ve been better.

Anyways, older vampire folklore where they lose their powers temporarily in sunlight is true, and they're weak to sliver like werewolves(strigoi are also in relation to them in terms of shape-shifting). Btw, everyone including Adum aka YMS and his friends have been waiting for that godawful CGI baby since the first movie! We should call Resemee the 'Twilight Baby' like how we nicknamed Roshan the 'Ice Age Baby'! And tbh, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is legit an unintentional comedy disguised as a supernatural action romance drama! A really hot dude is attracted to you for reasons you have no control over.
Bella's blood, the scent of it, and him being unable to read her mind are all factors that attracted Edward to her, but all are things that have nothing to do with Bella's personality, appearance or abilities.

It's the Ultimate Insecure Teenagers Fantasy of someone Incredibly hot being supernaturaly strongly drawn to you for reasons outside of your control, so you can't mess that up! That Bella was written as blank slate as humanly possible for the readers to imagine themselves as her only made that more appealing.

I acctually love both the movies and the books (). And I love the creative idear of making the Vampires out of stone. It goes along well with the sparkeling. Newborns being stronger also makes sense cause they have the freshest Vampire-poisen in them.

Yo I remember this Ed Edd n Eddy fan comic called Dawn of the Ed where Ed turns into a Werewolf and Marie Kanker turns into a vampire and Double D turns into a half wolf half vampire. And you know what? That comic of a stupid kids show had both better werewolf and vampire idea AND ROMANCE than the whole Twilight series! And that’s saying something especially for the romantic because the romantic interests in those comics were the kanker sisters. THE KANKER SISTERS!! If you know anything about EEnE and you’ll understand what I mean. So if you want an action romance story about werewolves and vampires, just read Dawn of the Ed instead. It’s way better

Yeah shockingly, Robert Pattinson nailed Batman imho. Usually it’s controversial when they cast different actors as Batman people think that won’t fit the character. Taylor Lottener (RIP spelling) the other hand, don’t think he fully recovered from this. He wasn’t even in the new Sharkboy and Lavagirl movie.

I was hoping you’d mention any of Pattinson’s indie films post-Twilight, especially Good Time, The Lighthouse, and The Rover. I liked The Batman, but he gives MUCH more powerful performances in those other films I mentioned. Actually, pretty much all his post-Twilight work has been incredible, but his indie work is by far the best.
I used to be one of those people a few years ago who saw him as a bad actor until he started getting Oscar buzz for The Lighthouse. Then, I checked out his other work and now I’m a Robert Pattinson stan. Never judge an actor based off one film series, I tell ya! The man has honestly jumped up to being one of my all-time favorite actors. It’s clear now retrospectively that the problems with Twilight were the script and the direction.
