Jaws
J.W Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had an appointment just the other day
The doctor came in he said you've got to get away
Too much junk and not enough brush
I'll give you stuff that'll give you a rush for your
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life in Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life In Jaw
Yeah, you got it
I went to get my prescription filled
The drugs got me carried away, I started to steal
A man inside said, what's wrong with your mouth
I coughed in his face and said, you've got it now
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life in Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life In Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life in Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life In Jaw
Yeah, you've got it
But you've got to get rid of it too
Don't forget to visit your dentist
Twice a day
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life in Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life In Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life in Jaw
Yellow Life in Jaw, Yellow Life In Jaw
Yeah, you got it

You gotta get rid of it
Man, you're disgusting

Overall Meaning

In J.W's song "Jaws," the lyrics depict a humorous and satirical take on the consequences of a life consumed by excessive indulgence and addiction. The singer starts off visiting a doctor who advises them to "get away" from their unhealthy habits of consuming too much "junk" and not paying enough attention to their oral hygiene ("not enough brush"). The doctor promises them a rush of excitement and escape from their mundane existence, symbolized by the "Yellow Life in Jaw" that is plaguing them.

As the story progresses, the singer goes to get their prescription filled but instead gets carried away by the drugs and starts stealing. In that intense state, they confront someone who questions their behavior, and in a defiant act of rebellion, the singer coughs in their face, effectively passing on their "Yellow Life in Jaw" to the person who judges them.

The song plays on the idea of the literal "yellow life," which can be interpreted as the physical consequences of drug use and neglecting one's dental health. However, it also serves as a metaphor for a life consumed by vices and self-destructive behaviors. The final lines of the song encourage listeners to not only rid themselves of these negative influences but also to take care of their dental hygiene by visiting the dentist regularly.

Overall, "Jaws" uses humor and irony to shed light on the consequences of addiction and the importance of taking care of oneself physically and mentally. It serves as a cautionary tale while also poking fun at societal norms and expectations.

"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb eleven hundred men went into the water vessel went down in twelve minutes didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour tiger thirteen-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know..was our bomb mission had been so secret no distress signal had been sent heh"-Quint
(Quint pauses and takes a drink)
"They didn't even list us overdue for a week very first light chief sharks come cruisin' so we formed ourselves into tight groups. Y'know it's...kinda like ol' squares in a battle like uh you see in a calendar like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was shark comes to the nearest man and that man he'd start poundin and hollerin' and screamin and sometimes the shark'd go away...sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into ya right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes black eyes like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white and then...oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin' the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and they... rip you to pieces.
(Quiht pauses)

I dunno how many men, they averaged six an hour on Thursday mornin' Chief I bumped into a friend of mine Herbie Robinson from Cleveland-baseball player, boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep reached over to wake him up...bobbed up and down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended well...he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day Mr. Hooper a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us young pilot a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway he saw us and come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. Y'know that was the time I was most frightened waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a life jacket again so eleven hundred men went into the water three hundred sixteen men come out and the sharks took the rest June the 29th, 1945"-Quint
(Quint pauses, smiles, and raises his glass)
"Anyway...we delivered the bomb"-Quint

OUTSTANDING EDITING by uploader! The blending of the music with visuals and original dialogue is very impressive

John Williams is one of my favourite composers, and this movie, along with ET and Jurassic Park, is definitely the most memorable scores he's done. Just two notes, and you've got yourself a villain!

The Protagonist

Star wars too

Lal Lancashire

Still one of my favourite movies and excellent soundtrack too 👍

Saw this film in 1975 I was 9 years old and the "Out to Sea" track will always be connected to me no matter where I traveled. I'm sure when I kick the bucket, that music will play.

The perfect summer movie.

The Protagonist

Probably the best summer movie ever.. Gifted generation of 70s..

Coffee is for closers

"Your going to need a bigger ⛵ boat." Ironically Jaws (1975) biggest success came as the result of the failure of the mechanical Shark 🦈 named "Bruce" to work. Spielberg had to find inventive ways of showing the danger of this fearsome beast without actually showing it as originally intended. Coupled with John Williams, I believe this was his first major score and collaboration with Spielberg, and movie magic was created. In fact following his work on this it was Spielberg who recommended Williams to George Lucas when he was making the original Star Wars.
