Promised Land
J. Welbon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Left my home in Norfolk, Virginia, California on my mind.
Straddled that Greyhound and rode it into Raleigh and on across Caroline.
We stopped in Charlotte but we bypassed Rockhill, we never was a minute late.
We were ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown rolling out of Georgia state.
Had some motor trouble that turned into a struggle half way across Alabam.
That hound broke and left us all stranded in downtown Birmingham.
So right away I bought me a through train ticket right across Mississippi clean,
And I was on that Special Flyer out of Birmingham smoking into New Orleans.
Someone's got to help me get out of Louisiana, just to help me get to Houston town.
There's an uncle there who cares a little about me and he won't let the poor boy down.
Sure as you're born, he bought me a silk suit, put some luggage in my hand.
And I woke up high over Albuquerque on a jet to the Promised Land.
Working on a T-Bone steak, a la carte, flying over to the Golden State.
When the pilot told us that in thirteen minutes he would have us at the terminal gate.
Swing down chariot, come down easy, taxi to the terminal dome.
Cut your engines and cool your wings and let me make it to the telephone.
Los Angeles give me Norfolk, Virginia, tidewater four-ten-O-nine.

Tell the folks back home this is the Promised Land calling,
And the poor boy is on the line.

Overall Meaning

J. Welbon's "Promised Land" is a song about a man leaving his home in Norfolk, Virginia, with "California on his mind". The first verse describes the man's journey on a Greyhound bus through Raleigh and Caroline, stopping in Charlotte and bypassing Rockhill, and making it 90 miles out of Atlanta by sundown. The second verse reveals motor trouble in Alabama, which leaves him stranded in Birmingham. The man buys a through train ticket across Mississippi to reach New Orleans, where he believes he can find help to get to Houston. The third verse tells of his uncle in Houston, who buys him a silk suit and luggage and sends him on a jet to the Promised Land, which is California. In the fourth verse, the man is flying over the Golden State, dreaming of a T-Bone steak when the pilot announces they will soon arrive at the terminal gate. The final lines are a plea to Los Angeles to connect him with his hometown of Norfolk, to tell them he has reached the Promised Land.

The song's narrative has a strong sense of movement, both geographically and socially. It speaks to the idea of the Promised Land as a place where a person can escape the hardships of their life and find a new start. The journey from Norfolk to California is a symbol of hope and possibility, and the man's hardships along the way only amplify the sense of triumph when he finally reaches his destination. The use of the Greyhound bus and the train ticket evoke images of the Great Migration that occurred in the mid-twentieth century, as African Americans left the South in search of better opportunities in the North and West.

fall down and spread their wings like doves.
