Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
JD Souther Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They asked me how I knew my true love was true

I of course replied "something here inside cannot be denied"

They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"

When your heart's on fire, you must realize smoke gets in
your eyes

So I *chaffed* them and I gaily laughed to think they could

doubt my love

Yet today my love has flown away, I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide

So I smile and say "when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in

your eyes"

Overall Meaning

The song by JD Souther, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, is about the pain of lost love. The song begins with a conversation between the singer and some people who ask him how he knows his true love is true. He confidently replies that he just knows it because there is something inside him that cannot be denied. However, the people warn him that love can make people blind, and when your heart is on fire, you must be aware that smoke could get in your eyes. The singer dismisses their concerns, thinking they cannot possibly doubt his love.

But as the song progresses, the truth of their words is revealed. The singer's love has flown away, and he is left alone without her. His laughing friends now mock him, and he cannot hide his tears. He tries to put up a brave face but acknowledges that when a lovely flame dies, smoke does indeed get in your eyes.

The song is a poignant reminder of the pain and grief that come with lost love. The singer's confident declarations at the beginning of the song now seem hollow and empty, and the realities of the situation have hit him hard. He has learned the hard way that love can indeed make people blind, and that when you are blinded by your feelings, it can be tough to see the truth ahead.

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh-oh-oh-oh, I, of course, replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied" (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
They said, "Someday you'll find
All who love are blind"
Oh-oh-oh-oh
When your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So, I chaffed them
As I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt our love
Yet today, my love has gone away
I am without my love (without my love)
Now, laughing friends deride
Tears, I cannot hide
Oh-oh-oh-oh
So, I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes"
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes

Me and my dad watched this movie in the early 90s on TV and I really remember him telling me „If I die, play this song on my funeral“. He passed away last week on 21.01.2021 at the age of 83.
I will fulfill that wish.

Love the song, this is my favorite version. It doesn't hurt that Holly Hunter is easy on your eyes. She looks beautiful in that gown.
