Carty grew up in the sleepy coastal town of Bellingen NSW, where he had the time, the space and the support to write as honestly and sing as loudly as he possibly could. This sheltered upbringing left an indelible mark on his music that remains even after moving to Sydney at the ripe old age of 16.
When he arrived Carty submerged himself in the Sydney music scene and its culture, attending a performing arts high school, jamming and writing with anyone he could and playing venues large and small all over town.
“I came from a town that ran on its own time, if you told someone you’d be somewhere at 3pm you would rock up at 3:30. Suddenly I was thrown into this fast paced scene of incredibly talented people – I wanted to make the most of it, I didn’t want to be left behind”.
Carty's thoughtful, melodic and beautiful folk songs ensured he wasn’t. He spent several years writing and touring, playing some of Australia’s best-known venues with some of Australia’s best loved artists (Tim Freedman, Shayne Nicholson and Lovers Electric) along the way, and all the while honing his craft.
2009 was a big year with a deal with exclusive Sydney based indie label “Gigpiglet Recordings” (also home to ex Machine Gun Fellatio front man Pinky Beecroft and his band The White Russians and critically acclaimed Australian born Indonesian based singer/songwriter Athron). Wasting no time Jack is currently putting the finishing touches on a record scheduled for release through Gigpiglet / Inertia Distribution in October.
Combine this with a solid schedule of tours booked and running into the new year and recent achievements including gaining video airplay on Channel V for independently released track “Good Old Town” and being selected by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) to showcase an original track at their inaugural international songwriters convention “Song Summit” and its fair to say that things are looking up for Jack. In Typical country fashion he is taking it all in his stride:
“At this stage I just want to play my songs for people and be able to pay my rent you know? Anything more than that is a massive bonus.”

Hope
Jack Carty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And pays her bills
She try’s to improve
On what she builds
She takes the hits
And bears the pain
When life is hard
Laughing in her face
Hope don’t leave
When she needs you
Please don’t run away too far too soon
When all is dark inside her room you’re the one she holds onto
Some get luck
And a fast track there
And some are happy just where they are
But oh, I feel that there’s more to me
But the dealer won’t count the cards up my sleeve
Hope don’t leave
When I need you
Please don’t run away too far too soon
When all is dark inside my room you’re the one I hold onto
You’re a temptress
But I know your kind.
You whisper softly “you’ll make it if you try”
And every time I fall I curse your name
But I love you so I hope you’ll stay
Stupid girl
You cannot win
It’s a rough and ruthless world we’re in
But oh I know it’s beautiful
To jump from ledges
When you know you’ll fall
Hope don’t leave
When we need you.
Please don’t run away too far too soon.
When all is dark inside our rooms you’re the one we hold onto
In his song “Hope,” Jack Carty speaks to the human experience of feeling lost and searching for something more. He first speaks of a woman who works hard and tries to improve, but life throws obstacles her way. He acknowledges that life can be hard and painful, but Hope is the one thing that she holds onto in those moments. The singer then shifts to himself, expressing his own desire for something more and acknowledging that life is not always fair. Again, Hope is the one thing that he holds onto in the midst of uncertainty.
The chorus of the song is a plea for this Hope to remain present during the dark times in life. Hope is not an easy thing to hold onto, as it can feel like it is slipping away too fast, but the singer implores this Hope to stay. The melancholy yet beautiful melody encapsulates the emotional turmoil that comes with searching for Hope.
“Hope” speaks to the human desire for something more, for purpose and a reason to keep going. It acknowledges that life can be hard, but there is still something worth holding onto. Through beautiful lyrics and a haunting melody, Jack Carty manages to capture the essence of what it means to hope.
