I saw Jack Hardy play in Brooklyn toward the end of 2010. This was the first and only time I heard him live, since he was never popular and died only months later. As an admirer of folk music, I had seen many young nostalgia acts as well as a few old timers trying to relive the past as they best they could. Jack, however, was the most genuine folksinger/songwriter I had ever seen. He played all of his own material, most of which had been written in the last few years and was completely relevant to the times. Building heavily upon the roots of folk music without imitating the past, every song he performed sounded like some great modern classic I had never heard before as he seamlessly moved from the deepest heartbreak to the most hysterical satire and unapologetic political outrage. Any artist today who wants to get it right could learn a lot from this man's legacy, which deserves far more attention than it has thus far gotten.

Until about an hour ago,I had not heard of Jack Hardy (wasn't likely to as I am in Britain).I was listening to a few of Suzanne Vega's songs that I hadn't heard before and came across a beautiful song called 'St.Clare' and upon reading that it was written by Jack Hardy,I needed to find out more about him. Thanks to the wonders of the internet I have now heard a few more of his songs, including this song and the excellent 'Rust Belt Town'.Sad to hear that he passed away as he appears to have been a fine singer/songwriter and the genuine article. Thanks for the background information on him.

@Nuno Santos Thank you Mr. Santos. Jack Hardy gave a concert around 1995 in Basel, Switzerland and I saw him perform the songs of this album. It was a wonderful evening. We were just 40 or 50 people in a small location. Now I know, thanks to you, it was Lisa Gutkin with whom he sang "Forget-Me-Not". Great moment.
