Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Alone Together
Jackie Gleason Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Beyond the crowd
Above the world
We're not too proud
To cling together
We're strong
As long as we're together
The blinding rain
The starless night
We're not in vain
For we're together
And what is there to fear
Together
Our love is as deep as the sea
Our love is as great as a love can be
And we can weather
The great unknown
If we're alone together
Our love is as deep as the sea
Our love is as great as a love can be
And we can weather
The great unknown
If we're alone together
Together
As long as you're close to me
Our love is as deep as a love can be
As long as you're close to me
Our love is as great as a love can be
Alone together
The lyrics of Jackie Gleason's song Alone Together hint at the idea of two individuals finding comfort in each other's company, despite the challenges that they may encounter. The lyrics suggest that the couple is above the world and beyond the crowd which implies that they could be living in a world of their own. Furthermore, they mention clinging together and the strength that comes with it. This is an indication that the couple is aware that unity is strength and that when they face the world together they have the power to overcome all obstacles.
The lyrics also mention the blinding rain and starless night, yet the couple isn't afraid as long as they are together. This suggests that the couple is aware of the terrifying realities of life, but they find strength in each other's love. They are willing to weather the great unknown as long as they are together. The repetition of the phrase "Alone Together" in the song symbolizes the paradox that two people can feel both alone and together simultaneously. The use of contrast in the lyrics is interesting as it highlights the extremes of love - it can be as deep as the sea and as great as love can be.
