Promised Land
Jackson Browne & Bruce Springsteen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I pick up my money and head back into town
Driving 'cross the Waynesboro county line
I got the radio on and I'm just killing time
Working all day in my daddy's garage
Driving all night chasing some mirage
Pretty soon little girl I'm gonna take charge
'Cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no, I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start
The dogs on Main Street howl
'Cause they understand
If I could wrench one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no, I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
Well there's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted
The dogs on Main Street howl
'Cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
And I believe in a promised land
And I believe in a promised land
The lyrics to "Promised Land" by Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen touch on themes of hope, perseverance, and the pursuit of a better life. The song describes a protagonist who is working hard and trying to live a fulfilling life, but still feels trapped and unsatisfied. The opening lines evoke a sense of longing and escape, as the singer is driving across the county line with the radio on, seeking something beyond his current circumstances.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's belief in a promised land, a metaphorical place where dreams can come true and the pains of life can be overcome. This belief in a better future fuels the singer's determination to take charge and make a change. However, there is also a sense of frustration and desperation in the lyrics. The singer acknowledges their efforts to live the right way, but feels the weight of their struggles. The desire to "explode and tear this whole town apart" reflects a deep-seated yearning for freedom and release from the burdens they carry.
The final verse introduces a dark cloud rising from the desert floor, symbolizing the challenges and obstacles on the path to the promised land. The singer is willing to face the storm, knowing that only those with faith will withstand its destructive power. The lyrics convey a profound belief in the ability to overcome adversity, to blow away the dreams, lies, and pain that hold them back, and ultimately find redemption and fulfillment in the promised land.

What a day it was in central park! I was 22 years old and believed we really could change the world on that day. I wasn't a huge Bruce fan, but he won me over with this performance. Going to see Jackson on Friday night headline a show with Jorma Kaukonen at the Capitol theater 12/17/21 in a charity get out the vote effort. Almost 40 years later. Amazing....
