Potential
Jackson Wagner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I retraced my steps for you
It's something that I thought I wouldn't have to
Ever do
I reduced myself to dust
Left out in the Sun to rust
Impossible to stand out in the grains
This old world just hasn't felt the same
I don't wanna hear about potential
I don't care to know what's up your sleeve
I don't need to know about the burdens that you carry
If you're just gonna turn around and leave

Always changing, never fine
Some things just don't clear the mind
The way that they used to
Always rooted, somehow
I bought my girl a camera now
She's off taking pictures of someone else
And I'm thinking I could use a little help

I don't wanna hear about potential
I don't care to know what's up your sleeve
I don't need to know about the burdens that you carry
If you're just gonna turn around and leave

I don't wanna hear about potential
And I don't care to know what's up your sleeve
I don't need to know about the burdens that you carry
If you're just gonna turn around and leave

That's why I don't wanna hear about potential
And I don't need to know what's up your sleeve
I don't need to know about the burdens that you carry

If you're just gonna turn around
You're just gonna turn around and leave

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jackson Wagner's song "Potential" depict a sense of disappointment and frustration in relationships. The first verse expresses a willingness to go to great lengths for someone, even retracing steps and reducing oneself to dust. However, despite these efforts, the persona feels like they are just another grain in the world, unable to stand out or make a significant impact. This feeling of insignificance is further emphasized by the line "This old world just hasn't felt the same." It suggests a longing for a sense of fulfillment that has been absent.

The chorus reveals the persona's reluctance to hear about someone's potential or the things they are capable of. It implies that empty promises and words are of no interest. The persona is tired of hearing about what someone might do but never actually accomplishes. The line "If you're just gonna turn around and leave" reflects the persona's frustration with individuals who make commitments but ultimately fail to follow through.

The second verse introduces the idea of change and the struggles of maintaining mental clarity. Things that once brought peace of mind no longer have the same effect. The persona mentions buying a camera for their partner, but now that person is off taking pictures of someone else, indicating a sense of longing or betrayal. The persona contemplates seeking help, perhaps feeling overwhelmed or lost in the face of these disappointments.

In summary, "Potential" explores the weariness of unfulfilled promises, the longing for stability and a sense of worth, and the frustrations that arise when someone fails to live up to expectations in a relationship.

Never had a flu with that much muscle soreness, throat hurting, stiffness in joints, etc. Not just the sinuses and puking side of that is similar to the flu it's just a draining disease.
