Collier's style fuses elements of jazz, a cappella, groove, folk, funk, pop, electronic music, classical music, gospel, soul and improvisation, and often features extreme use of reharmonisation. In 2014, Collier signed to Quincy Jones' management company and began working on his one-man, audio-visual live performance vehicle, designed and built at MIT in Boston.
On 1 July 2016, Collier released his debut album, In My Room, which was entirely self-recorded, arranged, performed and produced in his home in London. In February 2017, Collier was awarded two Grammys for his arrangements of "Flintstones" and "You And I", both from the album.
DOWN THE LINE
Jacob Collier Lyrics

Trying to find some peace of mind
Then I saw you
You were takin' it slow, and walkin' it one step at a time
You said, "Listen, stranger
I'm feeling low now
I don't know which way to go"
Maybe I could help you along and sing you a song
And move you on"
Singing down the line
Where shall we go?
Where shall we go?
Down the line
Where shall we go?
She said
"I'm looking for a kind of shelter
No place for me to call my own
I've been walking all night long, but
I don't know where to call my home"
"The only way to find that place is
Close to where my heart is
I know I'm gonna get there
But I've got to keep on walking down the line"
Down the line, yeah, say
Oh
Where shall we go?
Where shall we go?
Where shall we go?
She said
"Estoy buscando un lugar tranquilo
Un lugar que sea mío
Lo he estado buscado toda la noche
Pero no sé dónde se encuentra"
"The only way to find that place is
Close to where my heart is
Maybe I'm never gonna get there
But I've got to keep on walking down the line"
Got to keep on walking down the line
Got to keep on walking down the line
I said "You go on walking
Down the line
Wasting all your
Precious time
But you're never gonna find it
Because there is no end to the line
There's no destination for to find"
(There's no destination, baby)
"But if you get there
Don't forget me
Cause I'm the one who
Set you free
But don't come calling
'Cause I won't wanna call you a friend
So, this is end of you and me
Say, I won't wanna call you a friend
So, this is end of you and me
No, I won't wanna call you a friend
So, this is end of you and me"
In "Down the Line," Jacob Collier talks about finding oneself, seeking shelter, and moving forward. The lyrics are filled with metaphorical references to a train, tracks, and walking down the line, which symbolizes the journey of life.
The song starts with the singer walking down the line, trying to find some peace of mind, and encountering someone who is feeling lost. The singer tries to offer help by singing a song and moving the person along. The chorus raises the question of where to go, emphasizing the disorientation of the individual.
The second verse is sung in Spanish, capturing the experience of being lost in a foreign land. The woman is looking for a place she can call her own and is trying to find it close to where her heart is. The singer tries to encourage her to keep moving and holds out hope that she will find what she is seeking.
In the final verse, the singer warns the woman that there is no end to the line and no destination to find. He encourages her to keep searching but also warns her that he won't want to stay friends if she finds what she's looking for. The song's final line suggests that the singer and the woman are separating as she pursues her quest for shelter.
Overall, "Down the Line" is a song about the journey of life and how we can help each other along the way. It emphasizes the need to keep moving forward, even when it feels like we are lost.

I was walking down the line
I was searching for a path to tranquility
Trying to find some peace of mind
Looking for calm and comfort in my life
Then I saw you
Suddenly, I noticed you
You were takin' it slow, and walkin' it one step at a time
You were moving at a deliberate, steady pace
You said, "Listen, stranger
You spoke to me saying,
I'm feeling low now
I feel down and out at the moment
I don't know which way to go"
I'm lost and don't know my way
I said, "If you're lost now
I replied,
Maybe I could help you along and sing you a song
Perhaps I could aid you and serenade you along the way
And move you on"
And drive you forward
Singing down the line
Serenading as we trek along the route
Where shall we go?
Where do we head along the path we take?
She said
She spoke,
"I'm looking for a kind of shelter
"I'm searching for a haven
No place for me to call my own
Nowhere I can claim as my personal space
I've been walking all night long, but
I have wandered all through the night, but
I don't know where to call my home"
I do not know where to establish my base
"The only way to find that place is
"The best way to locate it is
Close to where my heart is
Near where my passion lies
I know I'm gonna get there
I'm certain I will make it there
But I've got to keep on walking down the line"
However, I must persist on this path
Oh
Oh
Where shall we go?
Where does the path lead?
She said
She spoke,
"Estoy buscando un lugar tranquilo
"I'm seeking a peaceful place
Un lugar que sea mío
A place that is solely mine
Lo he estado buscado toda la noche
I have been searching for it all night long
Pero no sé dónde se encuentra"
But I do not know where to find it
"The only way to find that place is
"The optimal means of finding it is
Close to where my heart is
Near where my passion lies
Maybe I'm never gonna get there
Perhaps I won't ever make it there
But I've got to keep on walking down the line"
Still, I must keep pressing on
Got to keep on walking down the line
I must keep moving forward
I said "You go on walking
"You should continue to trek forward
Down the line
Along the path
Wasting all your
Squandering all of your
Precious time
Valuable time
But you're never gonna find it
However, you will never discover it
Because there is no end to the line
Since the path doesn't have a conclusion
There's no destination for to find"
There is no target to reach
(There's no destination, baby)
(There is no end goal, honey)
"But if you get there
"In case you do make it there
Don't forget me
Do not forget about me
Cause I'm the one who
Since I am the person who
Set you free
Freed you
But don't come calling
Though, do not try to call me
'Cause I won't wanna call you a friend
I will not want to regard you as a friend
So, this is end of you and me
Therefore, this is the conclusion of our relationship
Say, I won't wanna call you a friend
I reiterate, I will not consider you a friend
So, this is end of you and me
Hence, this is the conclusion of our companionship
No, I won't wanna call you a friend
To be clear, I will not see you as a friend
So, this is end of you and me
So, this marks the end of our bond

I love how every piece of music he writes is really an album or 2 worth of musical concepts, and they all work so well together.
