Jacob William Hoggard (born July 9, 1984 in Burnaby, British Columbia) is a Canadian singer from Abbotsford, British Columbia. He finished in third place on the second season of Canadian Idol. He is currently the lead singer of Hedley.
Hoggard had auditioned for Canadian Idol at the urgings of his mother and girlfriend. He bet his bandmates $50 each that he would not make it past the first round of auditions. Hoggard lost the bet, making it to the final three with his unique sound, unorthodox antics, and stage presence. It should be noted that as the contest progressed, some people believed that Hoggard realized that he did not want to win Canadian Idol and be tied down with contracts and recordings that he had no control over. Instead, it is believed that Hoggard used the experience as a platform to promote himself and Hedley. Within hours of him being cut from the competition, Hedley reportedly received many contract offers.
They released their debut album on September 6th, 2005 and currently have five singles off of their self titled debut, "Villain", "On My Own", "Trip", "321", and their newest, "Gunnin'". A while before the release of their album, Hoggard changed every member of his band. The new members of Hedley are Chris Crippin, Tommy Mac, and Dave Rosin. They have also released a CD single for "On My Own" which includes the songs "On My Own" and "Johnny Falls", released on August 2nd, 2005 and has been recently certified Platinum. "On My Own" managed to hit number one the charts.
Hedley has been nominated for two Juno Awards in the categories of Rock Album Of The Year and New Group Of The Year.

(10, 9, 8)
Ground control to Major Tom,
(7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2)
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on.
(1, liftoff)
This is Major Tom to ground control.
And I'm floating in the most peculiar way,
And the stars look very different today-ay-ay.
Ground control to Major Tom your circuit's dead,
There's something wrong,
Can you hear me Major Tom?
Can you hear me Major Tom?
Can you hear me Major Tom?
Can you hear......
I'm floating 'round my tin can.
Far above the moon.
Planet Earth is blue,
And there's nothing I can do.
The song "Space Oddity" by Jacob Hoggard is a tribute to David Bowie's hit single of the same name. The lyrics describe the launch of an astronaut named Major Tom, who is communicating with ground control as he embarks on a journey to space. Major Tom is instructed to take his protein pills and put on his helmet, signifying the beginning of his mission. As he steps out of the spacecraft door and begins to float, he describes the stars as being different and peculiar. However, as the song progresses, the communication between ground control and Major Tom becomes disconnected, and there is a sense of despair as Major Tom floats in space with a circuit that is dead. He is surrounded by emptiness, and the final lines of the song describe him floating in his tin can far above the moon, with nothing to do as he observes a blue planet Earth.

Why do the runner ups in singing competitions always become more successful than the winners? I'm not complaining (Maybe about one direction) but it's just a trend that I've been noticing
