His father died in 1981, when he was only three years old. His grandfather Hoagy Lands, sang with many top groups, including The Drifters. Singing at family reunions and local talent shows preceded a successful tryout at the Apollo Theater's talent show. He won the contest three times when he was fifteen. He was signed to Kaygee (of Naughty by Nature)'s Divine Mill Records in 2000 and released his debut album, Ghetto Love, through the label in 2001. His sophomore effort, Still Ghetto, was released a year later, both to platinum success. Jaheim's third album, Ghetto Classics, was released on February 14, 2006, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. 2008 saw the release of Makings of a Man. His most recent album to date (Jan 2013) was the 2010 release 'Another Round.'

What I have learned in the 24 years my mother has been gone...is that you NEVER stop needing them. 42 years old now and I never needed to hear her more than I do today. I always cry listening to this beautiful soulful song. Even when am driving with wifey, i cry inside cos i don't want her to see me crying and start crying too. This song appeals to me in a special kind of way. I have had this song on my phone since 2006 maybe, but I didn't appreciate this song until I lost my beloved and amazing dad in 2018, ever since then this song makes me cry and I still love playing because my dad believed so much in me but death took him so he didn't live to see me living the life that he believed I would live. It hurts when your parent that believes so much that you wil make it in life even against all odds, is not there to enjoy your success with you, it's just unfair what death inflicts on humans.
