James Blake began his final year at Goldsmiths in September 2009 studying popular music while recording songs in his bedroom. In July 2009, he attended the Latymer School and released his debut single "Air and Lack Thereof" on Hemlock Audio. It was a firm favorite with Gilles Peterson from BBC Radio 1, and Blake was invited to do a special mix on Peterson's worldwide show, which included an exclusive Mount Kimbie track.
Blake released his debut EP The Bells Sketch on 8 March 2010 on Hessle Audio, followed soon after by CMYK on 31 May 2010 and Klavierwerke on 10 October 2010, both on R&S Records. All three EPs were met with significant critical acclaim: BBC's Nick Grimshaw chose CMYK as his Record of the Week, the title track of CMYK was ranked 24th on Frontier Psychiatrist's top 40 songs of the year, and all three of Blake's 2010 EPs were collectively ranked 8th on Pitchfork's top 50 albums of 2010.
On 4 February 2011, Blake released his self-titled debut LP, James Blake, via ATLAS and A&M. Three singles were released for the album: "Limit to Your Love," "The Wilhelm Scream," and "Lindisfarne"/"Unluck". The album was very well-received by critics: on 29 September 2010, BBC's Zane Lowe made "Limit To Your Love" his "Hottest Record in the World," Pitchfork awarded the album Best New Music and ranked it the 12th best album of 2011 on their year-end list, and it was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize.
On 7 October 2011, Blake released his fourth EP, Enough Thunder, via ATLAS and A&M. Two singles were released for the EP: "Fall Creek Boys Choir," a collaboration between Blake and Bon Iver, and "A Case of You," a cover of Joni Mitchell. On 12 December 2011, Blake released another EP through R&S, Love What Happened Here.
Coming Back
James Blake Lyrics

Can't fade us to black
So I'm coming back, coming back
Coming back, coming back
'Cause it hurts, 'cause it hurts
Like the end of the world
And like the trail, like the trail
So I'm coming back, coming back, tail between my legs
Forget what I said, what I said, what I said, what I said
There's a mile between my heart and my head
So I take it all, take it all, take it all back (take it all back)
You shut down
Showed how you bring me down
Don't you have a clue 'bout where my mind is right now?
You say you love me, is it real?
But do you fantasize about the things you really wanna feel?
I know you fantasize about the life you really want to build
Know your eyes are watching God, baby, my eyes are hidden in the hills
Your first mistake was wanting me when you know I wasn't ready
You put that shit down heavy, couldn't let you regret me
Remember lies around the time we spent when you first met me
I put my shit down heavy, couldn't let you forget me, mmh (no, no)
Will never let you forget me
I wish I could take it
Yes, I love you and it's real
I went in too soon for the kill
But I really want to feel
And I think I want to build with you (I wish I could take it)
I couldn't let you reject me (no)
I couldn't let you forget me (no)
I wanted you to respect me
I wanted you to let me in (I wish I could take it)
So I'm coming back, coming back, tail between my legs
Forget what I said, what I said, what I said, what I said
(I wish I could take it)
There's a mile between my heart and my head (no, no)
So I take it all, take it all, take it all back (no)
(Take it all back)
I wish I could take it
I wish I could take it all
You say you love me, is it real?
(Coming back, coming back, coming back, coming back)
But do you fantasize about the things you really want to feel?
I know you fantasize about the life you really want to build
Know your eyes are watching God, baby, my eyes are hidden in the hills
The lyrics to James Blake's “Coming Back” are incredibly personal, revealing and soulful. The song is a deeply introspective look at a relationship that is on the rocks and the hardships that come with it. The song is an ode to the complexity of love, the messiness of relationships, and the courage it takes to come back and try again.
The first two lines of the song, “Can't stick to that, Can't fade us to black, So I'm coming back, coming back” set the tone for the rest of the song, which is about the singer’s difficulties in letting go of a past relationship. Despite their problems, the singer still has feelings for their partner and is willing to come back, even though it hurts them. The lines “'Cause it hurts, 'cause it hurts, Like the end of the world, And like the trail, like the trail, Of the soul I've never thought of before” reveal the deep emotional pain that comes with trying to rekindle a broken relationship.
The rest of the song is mostly the singer reflecting on their relationship, and how it went wrong. The line, “Your first mistake was wanting me when you know I wasn't ready,” is particularly poignant as it speaks to the importance of being on the same page in a relationship. The singer also questions their partner's feelings, “You say you love me, is it real? But do you fantasize about the things you really wanna feel?”, which shows the underlying insecurity they feel in the relationship.
Overall, “Coming Back” is a powerful and moving song that showcases James Blake's lyrical prowess and emotional range. The song is a beautiful exploration of love, loss, and the desire to come back and try again.
