No Tears
James Blunt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't I know it? Nobody has to say
I've been lucky.
Guess I was born that way
I thank my father,
His absence has made me strong
And I love my mother
But she had troubles with God
No tears for the life that you've led
You've had angels in your head
Did you hear them singing in the end
All the things that you've seen
All the things that could have been
Well I've been everything I want to be
So no tears, no tears for me

Yeah, I've bathed in sunshine
But cherished the fading light
And I heard my heartbeat faulter
On a winter's night
I loved a woman
She didn't hear my prayers
So Lord, oh Lord, I'm yours

No tears for the life that you've led
You've had angels in your head
Did you hear them singing in the end
All the things that you've seen
All the things that could have been
Well I've been everything I want to be
So no tears, no tears for me

'Cause someone some where's going home tonight
Trying to understand the sacrifice
So save your tears for those left behind

For the life that you've led
You've had angels in your head
Did you hear them singing in the end
All the things that you've seen
All the things that could have been
Well I've been everything I want to be

So no tears, no tears
No tears for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of James Blunt's song No Tears is an exploration of the singer's life and experiences that have helped him become the person he is today. The opening verse is a reflection on his good fortune and how he believes his father's absence has made him stronger. He acknowledges his mother's troubles with God but loves her all the same. In the chorus, the singer refuses to shed tears for himself because he has lived a good life and achieved everything he wanted. He believes he had angels in his head and hears them singing in the end.

The second verse is more introspective as the singer recalls how he has loved and lost. He mentions basking in the sunshine but cherishing the fading light. When his heart faltered on a winter's night, the woman he loved did not hear his prayers. Ultimately, the singer declares that he belongs to God. The final lines are a plea not to shed tears for him but to save them for those who have lost someone.

In summary, No Tears is an uplifting song that encourages listeners to celebrate the good things in life and to refuse to wallow in sorrow. The lyrics are deeply personal and show James Blunt's growth and resilience in the face of life's challenges and disappointments.

My wife left me after 29 years... just fizzled out and bored... and I heard last year for the 1st time 'Same Mistake" the line 'Im not calling out for a second chance, Im screaming at the top of my voice" it literally broke me, and I started listening to more of his catalogue; Id only previously listened to back to Bedlam many many years ago....what a talent, glad I rediscovered this man.
