Blunt was educated at Elstree School, Woolhampton, then Harrow School (where he received his nickname 'Blunty'), and finally the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Before the release of his album, Blunt was a commissioned officer in the British Army, rose to the rank of Captain and served as a NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo. He was also on duty for the funeral of the Queen Mother on 9th April, 2002.
He is currently signed to Linda Perry's American label Custard, and became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when his first single from Back to Bedlam, "You're Beautiful", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006. The last British artist to do so had been Elton John in 1997 with the song Candle in the Wind.
His second album, All The Lost Souls, was released on 17th September 2007.

And, darling, here we are
There must've been a reason
We've come this far
But nothing lasts forever
You blink and then it's gone
If we should be together
What you waiting for?
Don't leave it 'til the last dance
Don't leave it 'til the lights come up and the music stops
To kill the romance
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
You know it takes just one second to light that spark
But you miss it and you're in the dark
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
Don't leave it 'til the last dance
So many souls are leaving
We're almost at the end
We've had a lifetime being
Just good friends
But nothing lasts forever
We're here and then we're gone
If we should be together
What you waiting for?
Don't leave it 'til the last dance
Don't leave it 'til the lights come up and the music stops
To kill the romance
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
You know it takes just one second to light that spark
But you miss it and you're in the dark
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
Don't leave it 'til the last dance (last dance)
Oh, why does it have to be so hard?
Hard for both of us
Oh, why? 'Cause you're better than anyone
That I have ever known
Don't leave it 'til the last dance
Don't leave it 'til the lights come up and the music stops
To kill the romance
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
You know it takes just one second to light that spark
But you miss it and you're in the dark
Don't leave it 'til the last chance
Don't leave it 'til the last dance
The lyrics of James Blunt's "Last Dance" convey a sense of urgency and the fear of missed opportunities in a relationship. The opening lines, "A million lonely people / And, darling, here we are / There must've been a reason / We've come this far," suggest that amidst the vastness of the world and the loneliness that surrounds us, the singer and his partner have found each other. They reflect on the fleeting nature of life, with the line "nothing lasts forever, you blink and then it's gone." Despite this realization, they wonder why they haven't committed to each other yet, posing the question "what you waiting for?"
The chorus emphasizes the importance of not leaving things until it's too late. The repeated refrain "Don't leave it 'til the last dance" and "Don't leave it 'til the lights come up and the music stops" serves as a reminder to seize the moment and not let the chance for love slip away. The metaphorical "last dance" represents the last opportunity to make things work, to not let the spark between them fade away. The line "You know it takes just one second to light that spark, but you miss it and you're in the dark" highlights the fragility of love and the missed opportunities that can leave one feeling lost and alone.
The bridge offers a hint of vulnerability and longing, with the lines "Oh, why does it have to be so hard? / Hard for both of us / Oh, why? 'Cause you're better than anyone / That I have ever known." The singer acknowledges the difficulties that come with relationships but also recognizes the special bond and connection they share, suggesting that it's worth taking the risk and not letting fear hold them back.
Overall, the lyrics of "Last Dance" convey a sense of urgency and the fear of missing out on love. It encourages the listener to not wait until it's too late, but to take a chance and embrace the possibilities of love before it fades away.

The last ring … 🦢
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
You see one and the only one thing
A painting by the distant time’s wing
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
In their shadow of the hidden clouds
You’re allowed to listen how it sounds
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
A story unfolds like drop from the air
And the poem floats silently on there
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
The swans dance in their romancing
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
The one sings in late noon sensing
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
The very last dream of the last ones
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
A song of a tendering wrong comes
And the poet walks in his room lonely
Entire of himselves in the silence sings
Although the sun is shining thoroughly
On his wedding rings on a window sill
And a water lily blooming on his will
On the lake of one thousand mirrors
Thus a fish of gold swimming row till
The reel of love feels like a real wheel
And the bronzen edge rings so strong
Whether or not, whether or not wrong
Meantime poet’s hand rolls tears along
To steal the unspoken word in the song
Ring-ring, For whom the bell tolls here
By the lake of one thousand mirrors
Ring-ring, For whom the bell tolls here
By the lake of one thousand mirrors
Oolong, with blue blaked out for fear
By the lake of one thousand mirrors
The big poet sings about his chance
By the lake of one thousand mirrors
Lo! His life romance in dreamy dance
