Although comparisons have been made to many artists, such as Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and Jimi Hendrix, James prefers to celebrate his own unique style which he says has been influenced by "everything and nothing" (but not forgetting Bob Dylan).
Finalist in 2005's BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, playing to a full house at the Sage, Gateshead, and featured on Mike's Radio 2 folk programme in December 2005, James and other finalists were described by Mike Harding as "the cream of the UK's young acoustic folk and roots scene".

@Joseph Dutra The reason that the promoters were paying James was because they're getting the gate in exchange. In other words the the promoters are the ones who have the right to the ticket sales. What James wants to do instead is give the local radio Djs a percent of the gate in exchange for promotion. Doing it like this, James wins in two ways. One is that by cutting out the middle man, he is now in control of the money. Instead of getting a percent of what is rightfully his, he is giving a percent of it and receiving better quality work. The second way he benefits is that he no longer has to give out payola to the local radio stations. Payola is an old school music business practice where the record companies would pay stations and Djs to play their artists. There are many cultural icons who climbed the ladder like this. Since the money the Dj is getting paid is now contingent on how many people buy tickets to the show, he's going to play them regardless of whether he receives payola. He basically took one look at the music business and rearranged it to the most efficient way for him to get money.
