Really wished this could have been the theme for Quantum of Solace. Conflicting stories why it's not, so not arguing that point. Besides it having lyrics close to the title of the movie, I think the theme of this song relates to Bond trying to get over the death of Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. A theme that hung over this movie.

If this had been the theme, I bet there would have been much more attention paid to it like Adele's Skyfall theme. I can't really even understand the lyrics to the Alicia Keys song that was actually used in the movie without reading them online. I personally rate it near the bottom of the list of Bond themes.

Yeah I mean I love Jack White's music but he was terrible choice to do the Bond theme. His musical and vocal style just doesn't fit the franchise vibe at all. When the franchise strays too far from jazzy/soul territory for the theme performer it usually ends badly.

I heard that the reason they didn't use this song because David Arnold got into some major disagreements with the producers (always drama with those producers), so he left and the rights to the song went with him. Therefore they couldn't use this song even they wanted to.

However, Quantum of Solace's theme is far....VERY far...from even remotely being good. I thought I didn't like the one for Licence To Kill. These two easily trump that one!

Shirley Bassey IS Bond. She did as much to define the franchise as Sean Connery. Would there even be Bond themes without her? This is quintessential 'Bond'. I'm one of the minority who like this film (a lot). Bassey's vocals would have only lifted it higher.

I'm so torn between this and "Forever I Am All Yours" by Wolf/Eva Almer as the best song for this film. I kinda prefer the latter, but the more meloncholic Bassey song seems more appropriate for the mood of this Bond movie rather than the more upbeat Wolf/Eva track. I'd hate to be the one to choose between the 2.

I like the other song, I don't mind the repetition, but yes exactly, this song doesn't fit the mood of the film, rather than the Bassey song where you get the film that you exactly expect after your watch the opening music credits finish. It's such a narrow photofinish between 2 songs I'm crazy about, I'd hate to be the one to phone Eva/Wolf and tell them that their song that I am so in love with is the one I'm rejecting.

If i had to choose i'd go with this one, they're both great songs though, worthy of becoming classics. that pile of shit by keys/white will be forgotten..i mean who listens to that anyway?

Andrei Sakharow disagree. While Madonna's shitty theme, Sheryl Crow's awful theme, and the Jack White/Alicia Keys' bastardization were awful, we had some damned good ones since Cubby passed. Skyfall was majestic, You Know My Name was great, and I really did like Garbage's "The World Is Not Enough". Not to mention the two rejected songs (KD Lang's for Tomorrow Never Dies and this one) are incredible.

Seeing how Casino Royale was a "reboot/re-imagining" would have been a nice throwback to true Bond theme songs of the past especially with Shirley Bassey! I also think the intro credit sequence doesn't really match her tone and pace.

There was a writers strike during Quantum of Solace and Craig admitted that the producers and himself stepped in to write some of the script. I don;t know what happened with David Arnold but I liked Thomas Newman's score for Skyfall a lot and I cannot wait to hear his score for Spectre :)

But Arnold scored QoS. Was there a blowup between Arnold and the film makers during the writing or shortly thereafter? I assumed Arnold wasn't back for Skyfall (and the next film) because the director insisted on bringing in Newman as they've worked together for most of his pictures.

I'll never forget seeing QOS in the theaters with my best friend. Right after the crappy Another Way To Die ended, there was a brief pause in the audience and then a low murmur, and not a good one. My friend turned to me and said "What the fuck was that? That song sucked."

Now to hear this great song which was rejected makes me even more disgusted.

I'm glad they used the Jack White song instead. That awful song set the stage for the bad movie that was to follow. This song would have given you hope that you were about to watch a good movie only to suffer crushing disappointment.

They had previously used epic Shirley Bassey songs for two of the worst Bond films ever (Moonraker and Diamonds Are Forever), so there's that. But I agree that the Jack White song fits the movie well. It's weird and off-putting, but I kinda like it anyway and it has aged rather well in my opinion.

This really is the song, the emotion, the soul of the movie and, of Bond himself. When you think about it, no other singer could have sung this. Dame Shirley Bassey understands how to tell a story through her experiences and through a song. Soulful yet, one senses disappointment. The melody drives the listener to delve not only into this song and the songstress but, into your own personal feelings. Thank you for the posting and the effort. You really made my day. She is one of a kind.
