Man in the Mirror
James Morrison (jazz) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna make a change,
for once in my life
It's gonna feel real good,
gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right

As I, turn up the collar on
my favorite winter coat
This wind is blowing my mind
I see the kids in the streets,
with not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer disregard, a broken bottle top
And a one man soul
They follow each other on the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
(Na na na, na na na, na na, na nah)

I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It's time that I realize
That there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan
Could it be really me, pretending that they're not alone

A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart
And a washed-out dream
(Washed-out dream)
They follow the pattern of the wind ya' see
'Cause they got no place to be
That's why I'm starting with me

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Ooh!)
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Change his ways - ooh!)
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make that
Change

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Man in the mirror, oh yeah!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Better change!)
No message could have been any clearer
(If you wanna make the world a better place)
(Take a look at yourself and then make the change)

(You gotta get it right, while you got the time)
('Cause when you close your heart)
You can't close your, your mind!
(Then you close your, mind!)
That man, that man, that man, that man
With the man in the mirror
(Man in the mirror, oh yeah!)
That man, that man, that man,
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Better change!)
You know... that man
No message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make the change
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
Na na na, na na na, na na, na nah
(Ooooh)
Oh no, no no

I'm gonna make a change
It's gonna feel real good!
Come on!
(Change)
Just lift yourself
You know
You've got to stop it,
Yourself!
(Yeah! Make that change!)
I've got to make that change, today!
Hoo!
(Man in the mirror)
You got to
You got to not let yourself
brother
Hoo!
(Yeah! Make that change!)
You know, I've got to get
that man, that man
(Man in the mirror)
You've got to
You've got to move! Come on!
Come on!
You got to
Stand up! Stand up! Stand up!
(Yeah! Make that change)
Stand up and lift yourself, now!
(Man in the mirror)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
Aaow!
(Yeah! Make that change!)
Gonna make that change
come on!
You know it!
You know it!
You know it!
You know it

(Change)
Make that change.

Overall Meaning

The song "Man in the Mirror" by James Morrison is a powerful call to action for people to make a positive difference in the world starting with themselves. In the song, Morrison acknowledges the issues of poverty, homelessness, and broken dreams that he sees around him and recognizes that it is not enough to turn a blind eye. He shifts the focus to his own actions, declaring that he will make a change, and that it will feel good, make a difference, and be the right thing to do. He calls on others to do the same, to take a look at themselves and make a change to make the world a better place.

Morrison uses powerful imagery to illustrate his message. He turns up the collar on his winter coat, feeling the wind blowing his mind, and sees children on the streets with not enough to eat. He highlights the interconnectivity between people, using the metaphor of broken bottle tops and washed-out dreams to convey a sense of hopelessness and lack of direction. He urges listeners to start with themselves, using the repetition of the line "I'm starting with the man in the mirror" to emphasize the importance of taking personal responsibility for creating positive change.

Overall, the song is a message of hope and empowerment that resonates with people all over the world. It encourages listeners to recognize their own power to make a difference and to take action to create a better future for all.

WOW! What a cover-what a voice and what a guy. I'm looking James up on here because he visited my daughter's ward in hospital when she had leukemia. Such a nice guy and amazingly talented too! Bless him!

@MrDezmondo

I saw this dude at some festival and thought this was a voice that only comes around once in a blue moon. I just think he blew my mind and it will stay with me forever. Why don't I hear you more on the radio? Great track great voice ...thank you

@ssenadokmeci

listening it for 10 years...and still here (please add it to spotify james)

@fusion4262

James Morrison makes this song his own. Fabulous interpretation and a natural fit.

@TallinnTadgh

It was only when i read a comment about people 'covering MJ' that i realised it wasn't James song originally!
Cracking version.
(leaving aside minor quibble about it being 'acoustic' with a synth?)

@cjg28

everything he touches turns to gold, hes like Midas

@davidwhelan8250

I can't understand why he isn't massive these days, fantastic singer and performer!

@TheLetterheads

for someone with the looks of chris martin and the name of previous music legend, this james morrison has really created his own identity! very impressive.

@habitatgcx

I really hate when anyone tries to cover Mj, but this guy somehow captured mj's emotion/message. I'm impressed.

@HeartOfMetalx11

I agree most people fail hard. especially when they TRY to sound like MJ because no one can really emulate him. i like this cover a lot because he clearly felt the song and made it his own. instead of just taking a popular song and doing a cover for views.
