Number 1
Jamie Foxx Feat. Lil Wayne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got to get out more
Get in the place
Got to work out more
And sort out my face
I've got all the zines that tell me what to eat
And I'm tired of being told what to wear on my feet
And I don't have the time to get all worked up
About the year on the street

And it's not my fault, I can find my way
Yeah it's not my fault, there goes another day
I've been here too long, do I have to change
Into what it takes
To make it number one?

I feel out of favor
I don't look like a picture
You think I'm a loser
But I can see through you
You're running around like you're running the country
I know that you think that you've got one on me
Ear to the ground, like the boy about town
Can't get nothing to fit me

And it's not my fault, I can find my way
Yeah it's not my fault, there goes another day
I've been here too long, do I have to change
Into what it takes
To make it number one?

Got a call from an old friend, used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Sold his house, sold his car

Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives 'em a stand-up routine in L.A.

Overall Meaning

In Jamie Foxx's song "Number One," he expresses his frustration with societal pressures to conform to certain standards of appearance and behavior, and with the idea that success in life requires one to compromise their individuality. He tells himself that he needs to put himself out there more and work on his physical appearance, but he's tired of being told what to wear and eat. Foxx seems to be someone who has been trying to make it in the industry for a while but feels like an outsider and out of favor because he doesn't fit the mold. He recognizes that he has been in the game for a while and wonders whether he needs to change himself to become number one. Foxx also seems to be aware of the political power dynamics that shape society and the challenge of fitting into them. Foxx recognizes his inability to find his place in society and the fact that he has been too long in the game but wonders if changing himself is necessary to reach fame.

The song begins with Foxx lamenting about how he needs to go out more and put himself in situations that would benefit his career. However, he's frustrated with the societal expectations that come with appearing in public. He challenges himself to work out and improve his appearance but acknowledges that he's sick of being told what to do. The line "And I don't have the time to get all worked up/ About the year on the street" highlights how society puts a lot of pressure on individuals to fit in and conform, but Foxx doesn't want to be worked up by this. In the second verse, Foxx criticizes those who hold societal power and make the rules. He recognizes that people in positions of power tend to think they have one over him, but he sees through them. Foxx struggles to find clothing that fits him and acknowledges that he can't get anything to match his style.

Overall, the song "Number One" is a critique of societal pressure and conformity, as well as the struggle to establish oneself in the entertainment industry while maintaining individuality.
