If I Like It I Do It
Jamiroquai Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I like it I just do it
Say that we have all the time we need to make it right
Don't hurry for nobody
If it ain't the thing you like
Know your place and fit your space, young man you will conform
I didn't hear my soul express those rules when I was born.
'Cause I'm free to roam 'cause it's my home
You can't stop sweet inclination
The kids want the system breaking down
Not higher education
If it ain't no natural law
Then you can keep your regulations
'Cause if I like it I do it

But I keep on movin' though they wanna bring me down
I've gotta run for the cover,
And I keep on smiling
Though they wanna tie me down and give me death for the lover,
And I keep on losing though I'm proving what I'm doing
I'm still groovin', and if I like it I do it

You've got to help those people break that legislation
We can overcome this suffocation,
Execute your natural liberation
Happy to enjoy rejuvenation,
All around hear the sound
No-one can stop us now,
A thousand rules for plastic fools
Now they can take a bow.
Surely there's been time to see it doesn't work by now,
So if I like it, I do it

Still I,
Keep on finding that they're pushing those distorted visions.
And I keep on living but I'm dying 'cause of their decisions,

If I keep on looking I can find a higher space
I'm still groovin' and if I like it I'll do it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "If I Like It I Do It" by Jamiroquai is a song that speaks to the idea of individual freedom, rejecting society's conformity, and following one's natural inclinations. The singer advocates for living a life that is true to yourself, doing things that make you happy, not just because it conforms to society’s rules. The song opens with the message that when you like something, go ahead and do it. Life is time-bound, and it is crucial to not hurry for the sake of others. We should take our time and do what we want at our convenience.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of social rules of conformity such as ‘know your place and fit your space, young man you will conform.' The singer highlights that even though it may seem that society tells us to conform, there is no natural law that mandates such behavior. The chorus emphasizes that if there is no natural constraint against an action, then rules and regulations should not prevent one from doing it. The lyrics also touch on the importance of personal change in society, and how breaking from the standard helps people rise up against oppression. The song ends with a call to action to help people break free from legalistic thinking and move towards expressing their real selves.

I love the chilled atmosphere the song creates. It would be amazing to listen to this in a park, on a big empty hill on a sunny, breezy day.

I'd love to do exactly the same thing: listen to this song in that place ❤

it's more chilling the fact that this video uses some scenarios from the Too young to die video

Stuart is the best Jamiroquai bass player, of that there is no doubt. I am lucky enough to have met him and talked bass for hours. He is not a schooled player but he does have an incredible natural ability and a knack for writing brilliant bass lines. This one, is an absolute masterclass and makes the track! Never quite the same band after he left despite what Jay might think.
