They moved to New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Their original plan was to pursue a career on Broadway, but they soon changed their mind and returned to music. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 2003, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists, and made a couple of appearances on OutKast's 2006 album Idlewild, where they are featured on the songs "Call the Law" and "In Your Dreams".
By 2007, Monáe was ready to release her first solo work, titled Metropolis. It was originally conceived as a concept album in four parts, or suites, which were to be released through her website and mp3 download sites. After the release of the first part of the series, Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase in mid-2007, these plans were altered following them signing with Sean "Diddy" Combs' label, Bad Boy Records, later in the year. The label gave an official and physical release to the first suite in August 2008, which was retitled Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) and included two new tracks. The EP was generally well-received by critics, gaining Monáe a 2009 Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance for their single "Many Moons", festival appearances, and opening slots for the indie pop band Of Montreal. Monáe also toured as the opening act for band No Doubt on their summer 2009 tour.
In a November 2009 interview, Monáe revealed the title and concept behind her album The ArchAndroid. The second and third suites of Metropolis are combined into this full-length release, in which Monáe's alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather - also the protagonist of Metropolis: The Chase Suite - becomes a messiah-like figure to the android community of Metropolis.

Whoaaa
Another day (adabadee, nigga)
I take your pain away
Some people talk about ya like they know all about ya
When you get down they doubt ya
And when you tip it on the scene, yeah they talkin' bout it
They just talk about it, t-t-t-talk bout it
When you get elevated
They love it or they hate it
You dance up on them haters
Keep getting funky on the scene
While they jumpin' round ya
They trying to take all of your dreams
But you can't allow it
'Cause baby whether you're high or low
Whether you're high or low
You gotta tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
T-t-t-tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby, whether you're high or low (high or low)
Baby whether you're high or low (high or low)
You got to tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Now let me see you do the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
And I'm still tippin' on it
See I'm not walkin' on it
Or tryin to run around it
This ain't no acrobatics
You either follow or you lead, yeah
I'm talkin' bout ya
Keep on blaming the machine, yeah
I'm talkin' bout it
T-t-t-talkin' bout it
I can't complain about it
I gotta keep my balance
And just keep dancin on it
We gettin funky on the scene
Yeah you know about it
Like a star on the screen
Watch me tip all on it
Then baby whether I'm high or low (high or low)
Baby whether you're high or low (high or low)
You gotta tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Yeah, tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby
Whether you're high or low (high or low)
Baby whether you're high or low (high or low)
Tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Baby let me see you tight rope (tip, tip on it)
And I'm still tippin' on it
You gotta keep your balance
Or you fall into the gap
It's a challenge but I manage
Cause I'm cautious with the strap
Do damage to your cabbage that
A doctor cannot patch
Why you don't want no friction
Like the back of a matchbook
Daddy Fat Sax will fold you
And your MacBook
Close shows, shut you down
Before we go-go backwards
Act up, and whether we high or low
We gonna get back-up
Like the Dow Jones and NASDAQ
Sorta like a thong in an ass crack
Come on
I tip on alligators and little rattlesnakers
But I'm another flavor
Something like a terminator
Ain't no equivocating
I fight for what I believe
Why you talkin' 'bout it
J-j-just talkin' 'bout it
Some callin' me a sinner
Some callin' me a winner
I'm callin' you to dinner
And you know exactly what I mean
Yeah I'm talkin bout you
You can rock or you can leave
Watch me tip without you
N-n-now whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
Whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
I'm gonna tip on the tightrope
(Tip, tip on it)
Mmm
(Tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby
Whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
High or low
(High or low)
I got to tip on the tightrope
(Tip, tip on it)
Now baby tip on the tightrope
You can't get too high
(You can't get too high)
I said you can't get too low
(We can't get too low)
Cause you get too high
(You can't get too high)
No, you'll surely be low
(No, you'll surely be low)
1, 2, 3, ho
Yeah, yeah
Now shut up, yeah
Yeah, now put some voodoo on it
Ladies and gentlemen, the funkiest horn section in Metropolis
Yeah, oh
We call that classy brass
Ohh ohh
Oh
Do you mind?
If I play the ukulele
Just like a little lady
Do you mind?
If I play the ukulele
Just like a little lady
The lyrics to Janelle Monáe's “Tightrope” are about the struggles and pressures of being in the public eye and dealing with criticism and scrutiny. The song is a celebration of individuality and a call to be true to oneself, despite challenges. The chorus urges the listener to "tip on the tightrope," meaning to keep a balance and keep moving forward. Monáe talks about how some people talk about you like they know everything about you, but you should not let them affect you; instead, you should keep dancing and stay true to yourself.
The second verse references the challenge of keeping a balance, comparing it to walking on a tightrope. She then calls out those who blame their problems on outside forces, urging them to take responsibility and either lead or follow. The bridge of the song references the difficulty of staying balanced, using the analogy of alligators and rattlesnakes to represent the obstacles and distractions one might encounter. Monáe ends the song with a playful request to play the ukulele, a nod to her quirky and eclectic personality.

Another day (adabadee, nigga)
I take your pain away
Starting another day, I'll relieve your pain
Some people talk about ya like they know all about ya
When you get down they doubt ya
And when you tip it on the scene, yeah they talkin' bout it
Cause they can't tip on the scene
They just talk about it, t-t-t-talk bout it
People claim to know everything about you, but they doubt you when you struggle. As you rise to fame, they talk about it without ever experiencing it as they don't have the potential. They only talk about it.
When you get elevated
They love it or they hate it
You dance up on them haters
Keep getting funky on the scene
While they jumpin' round ya
They trying to take all of your dreams
But you can't allow it
As you rise to fame and fortune, people start paying attention to you. While some will admire you, others will hate you. Keep doing what you do; even if people hate you, keep chasing your goals and dreams.
Cause baby whether you're high or low
Whether you're high or low
You gotta tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
T-t-t-tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby, whether you're high or low (high or low)
Baby whether you're high or low (high or low)
You got to tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Now let me see you do the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
And I'm still tippin' on it
You have to keep your balance and be careful while walking on a tightrope, whether you're high or low in life. You have to hold strong to maintain your balance, moving forward through ups and downs. Stay focused and keep climbing.
See I'm not walkin' on it
Or tryin to run around it
This ain't no acrobatics
You either follow or you lead, yeah
I'm talkin' bout ya
Keep on blaming the machine, yeah
I'm talkin' bout it
T-t-t-talkin' bout it
I can't complain about it
I gotta keep my balance
I'm not walking or running around the issues. Let's not perform acrobatics; rather, either lead them or follow them. Keep playing the machines because you understand the system, but don't complain about it. Keep your balance; stay the course.
And just keep dancin on it
We gettin funky on the scene
Yeah you know about it
Like a star on the screen
Watch me tip all on it
Then baby whether I'm high or low (high or low)
Baby whether you're high or low (high or low)
You gotta tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Yeah, tip on the tightrope (tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby
Keep dancing with the rhythm of the machine. Get funky on the scene, and everybody knows about it. Perform on the stage just like a superstar. And whether you're high or low, you need to keep your balance. Keep on tip-toeing the tightrope.
You gotta keep your balance
Or you fall into the gap
It's a challenge but I manage
Cause I'm cautious with the strap
Do damage to your cabbage that
A doctor cannot patch
Why you don't want no friction
Like the back of a matchbook
Daddy Fat Sax will fold you
And your MacBook
Close shows, shut you down
Before we go-go backwards
Act up, and whether we high or low
We gonna get back-up
Like the Dow Jones and NASDAQ
Sorta like a thong in an ass crack
Come on
Keep your balance, or you'll fall into the gap, which no doctor can fix. Avoid getting into any arguments, just the way you prevent fire from a matchbook. You might think yourself a tough guy, but if you act up, Daddy Fat Sax gonna shut you down anytime. Both in high and low situations, take bold steps and fight back like the stock market, which picks up sooner or later. Let's ride.
I tip on alligators and little rattlesnakers
But I'm another flavor
Something like a terminator
Ain't no equivocating
I fight for what I believe
Why you talkin' 'bout it
J-j-just talkin' 'bout it
Some callin' me a sinner
Some callin' me a winner
I'm callin' you to dinner
And you know exactly what I mean
Yeah I'm talkin bout you
You can rock or you can leave
Watch me tip without you
I'm comfortable with fending off danger regardless of its size and underlying nature. I'm a different type like Terminator, and I don't equivocate. I assert myself for what I believe without any hesitation. Some people say I'm a sinner, while others say I'm a winner, but I am asking for your attention. You know what I mean, I'm talking to you. You can admire me or ignore me, but I'm still working and striving towards my goal.
N-n-now whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
Whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
I'm gonna tip on the tightrope
(Tip, tip on it)
Mmm
(Tip, tip on it)
Baby, baby, baby
Whether I'm high or low
(High or low)
High or low
(High or low)
I got to tip on the tightrope
(Tip, tip on it)
Now baby tip on the tightrope
Regardless of whether I'm high or low, I need to keep my balance and hold on to what I've achieved. It's worth treading on the tightrope of life, going step by step, even if it's hard. Stay focused and keep climbing.
You can't get too high
(You can't get too high)
I said you can't get too low
(We can't get too low)
Cause you get too high
(You can't get too high)
No, you'll surely be low
(No, you'll surely be low)
1, 2, 3, ho!
You can't be pompous and ignore others since you might fall hard; you can't be too absorbed in success. Similarly, you can't be too saddened by failure since it undermines your confidence. Stay composed, treading along the tightrope.
Yeah, yeah
Now shut up, yeah
Yeah, now put some voodoo on it
Ladies and gentlemen, the funkiest horn section in Metropolis
Yeah, oh
We call that classy brass
Ohh ohh
Oh!
Now keep quiet, and the best thing might happen. Let's put together some unique tricks to add flavor to the game. Let's perform with some incredible tunes, thanks to the funkiest critical section in Metropolis. It's another astounding event. Let's rock it!.
Do you mind?
If I play the ukulele
Just like a little lady
Do you mind?
If I play the ukulele
Just like a little lady
Would you mind if I played my ukulele? I'm not even sure if that's allowed. I'll be playing like a little lady. It's soothing to me, and it's good music for everyone.

I first became aware of Janelle through a Pink video featuring Nate, singing "Just Give Me a Reason", where Pink sings a bit from a song she first heard Nate singing... Searching for that song led me to a video of Nate and Janelle singing "We Are Young".
I was immediately mezmerized by her beauty, her perfection, and then noticed her love of music.
I searched for more and found the insightful "Turntables", now on my primary playlist.
And now the entertaining "Tightrope", on that same list.
I'll be looking for more.
67 year old white guy loves these videos and the artists.
Thank you Pink (whom I first noticed when I heard the line "... and you sold us down the river too far..." and immediately bought her album "Beautiful Trauma".
Loved every song. Love Pink.
My kid sister laughed as she told me Pink has been around, and she has been a fan, for over 20 years... it took me that long to notice her music.
Thank you Nate for collaborating with Janelle on "We Are Young".
Thank you Janelle for an introduction to another music genre and an artist I'm sure to love and appreciate... until I pass and watch as my planet, and everyone I love and everything I know, whirls away from me...
