So Afraid
Janelle Monae Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
While the dogs lap around the can
Falling down, climbing trees, swimming in the river
No life jacket on their backs
Daughters sharpen their knives and they hunt for food
Others watch their children grow
Mothers going to work
And they shake the hands of a corporate tycoon's ghost
And I'm afraid
Ah, I'm so afraid
Ah, what if I lose?
Is what I think to myself
I'm finding my shell
I'm afraid of it all, afraid of loving you
I'm a gift and a curse to the wilderness
When the leaves only turn to brown
The birds fly high
And they wink at all
Of the grandmothers on the ground
Rain pours down in the village dens
My cousins fetch for lunch
While I sit in my room writing letters
To my church and things and such
'Cause I'm afraid
Ah, I'm so afraid
Ah, what if I lose?
Is what I think to myself
I'm finding my shell
I'm afraid of it all, afraid of loving you
Cousins all in the creek
Riding high, ride with me
And the rain pours down, the cattle dancing, yeah
I'm so afraid
Ah, I'm so afraid
Ah, what if I lose?
Is what I think to myself
I'm finding my shell
I'm afraid of it all, afraid of loving you
I'm afraid, afraid of loving you
Cousins all in the creek
Riding high, ride with me
And the rain pours down, the cattle dancing, yeah
Janelle Monรกe's "So Afraid" is a track from Dirty Computer, her 2018 album that they described as a "tribute to marginalised people." The song features a mix of images depicting everyday life in rural America juxtaposed with overtones of the terror and uncertainty that can sometimes come with pursuing love. Monae contrasts the carefree childhood of kids playing in nature, including descriptions of dangerous behaviour like swimming without life jackets, with the more serious concerns of mothers providing for their families in the face of corporate greed. Central to the song is Monae's introspection on her fears of losing her identity and the love that is being offered to her.
Monae's lyrics contain a lot of wordplay and metaphoric ideas, intertwining themes and meanings that create several layers of interpretation. The line "Daughters sharpen their knives and they hunt for food," for example, seems to simultaneously reference the deeply interwoven bond between family and necessity in the rural American lifestyle and point to the added dimensions of everyday life that women have to negotiate. Monae also hints at her own insecurity by saying โIโm a gift and curse to the wilderness,โ suggesting that being an outsider or disruptor confers both benefits and drawbacks.
"So Afraid" is a multi-layered song that seems to originate from Monae's own grappling with both internal and external pressures. The song touches on themes of marginalisation and identity-seeking, with Monae counting the costs of embracing authenticity in a society that regularly pushes back against the defiantly unique, but which also recognises the joys of embracing oneself and one's culture.

So Afraid is becoming one of my favorite songs on Dirty Computer! Again Janelle Monae has made a wonderfully written album. It is a DAMN shame that she is not as big as she should be by now. So with that, I say...... I love you Miss Janelle, you are #1 in my book, and have ALWAYS been since I have first heard March of the Wolfmaster!!!

" Janelle Monae has made a wonderfully written album. It is a DAMN shame that she is not as big as she should be by now. "
Well its on just about EVERY top 10 album list in the world, and nominated for a Grammy. So it's picked up since you wrote this. :) Yeah I love her too.
@ingorichter649
I think, especially with this song she approved herself for the running music history. And - she is so young...
@indiesongwriter5474
If album doesn't break out then I'm sorry, this world is lost. Janelle is a living legend. She's up there with Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar.
@dee-raynesmash613
Derek Price who is Frank ocean?
@croatoan6562
Kendrick isn't up anywhere
