The tenth and youngest child of the Jackson family, she began her career with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976 and went on to appear in other television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes, and Fame. After signing a recording contract with A&M Records in 1982, she became a pop icon following the release of her third and fourth studio albums Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). Her collaborations with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial beats, which led to crossover success in popular music.
In 1991, Jackson signed the first of two record-breaking multimillion-dollar contracts with Virgin Records, establishing her as one of the highest-paid artists in the industry. Prior to her first studio project with Virgin, she appeared in her first of several lead film roles in Poetic Justice (1993). Her two studio albums which followed, Janet (1993) and The Velvet Rope (1997), saw her develop a public image as a sex symbol. These records, along with their promotional music videos and live performances in concert tours, branded Jackson as one of the world's most erotic performers, garnering both criticism and praise. By the end of the 1990s, she was named by Billboard magazine as the second most successful recording artist of the decade after Mariah Carey. The release of her seventh studio album All for You in 2001 coincided with a celebration of her impact on the recording industry as the subject of the inaugural MTV Icon special.
The backlash from the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy resulted in an industry blacklisting under the direction of Les Moonves, then-CEO of CBS Corporation. Jackson subsequently experienced reduced radio airplay, televised promotion and sales figures from that point forward. After parting ways with Virgin Records, she released her tenth studio album Discipline (2008), her first and only album with Island Records. In 2015, she partnered with BMG Rights Management to launch her own record label, Rhythm Nation and released her eleventh studio album Unbreakable the same year. Since then she has continued to release music as an independent artist.
Having sold over 100 million records, Jackson is one of the world's best-selling music artists. She has amassed an extensive catalog, with singles such as "Nasty", "Rhythm Nation", "That's the Way Love Goes", "Together Again", and "All for You"; she holds the record for the most consecutive top-ten entries on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with 18. She is also the only artist in the history of the chart to have seven commercial singles from one album (Rhythm Nation 1814) peak within the top five positions. In 2008, Billboard placed her number seven on its list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, and in 2010 ranked her fifth among the "Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years". In December 2016, the magazine named her the second most successful dance club artist after Madonna. One of the world's most awarded artists, her accolades include five Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, eleven American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and eight Guinness World Records entries. In 2019, she was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jackson has been cited as an inspiration among numerous performers and credited with elevating a standard of sound, showmanship and sex appeal expected of pop stars.

What do you think?
Do you think we're gonna have some time coming up soon
'Cause, you know, we're tryna plan a little trip here
(I know, we need to go away) I heard about that
Don't get offended (am I invited?)
Yes, of course, you're invited
Yeah, we need some time out
I know I need some sun, y'all, leave me alone
Yes, we'll take a couple of days off to really heal
(You are too pale)
Nah, but we do, we need to get away
(Four or five days) sounds good to me
(We will) yeah, we need to just chill
(A week is way too long) I know, but just picture this
Just sit under the sun (just like)
Just getting some sun
Friday morning and all my work is done
I've packed my bags, I'm on the run
I got a feeling that I'm gonna have some
Fun in the sun with my friends
And he's got me going
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Sorry I can't
Sorry I can't go now
Friday noon and my boss is on the phone
He's telling me that I can't leave home
An extra hand at work is what he
Called for, he said, "We need you here"
Tell my friends I'm going
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
I don't know why my job has called me in
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
I don't know why my job has called me
It makes no difference if you love work or not
If you dream your weekend, hand on the doorknob
Out with your friends and fun in the sun now
That's when the phone rings
Friday evening and I'm all alone at home
I bet my friends are having fun
I'll plan my weekend, dammit, leave the machine on
Next time he calls he'll hear my voice saying loud and clear
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
Whoops now, sorry I can't go
I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends
(Whoops now, sorry I can't go) with my friends
(Whoops now, sorry I can't go) with my friends
(Whoops now, sorry I can't go) with my friends
I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends
With Ann and Rusty (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Tina and Yuri (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Ken and Nancy (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Lynette and Tony, ohh (I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends)
Lisa and Jimmy (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Gwen and Julie (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Kimble and Josie (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Tish and Michael, ohh (I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends)
Karyn and Terry (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Betta and Katie (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Don and Kevin (whoops now, sorry I can't go)
Ricardo and Puffy, ohh (I'm out having fun in the sun with my friends)
Come on you guys (whoops now)
(Okay, here we go, where we going?)
(Going to) Anguilla, here we come
Here we come now (I'm ready, we're with you)
To the restaurants (I'm starving, let's go)
For some lobster (oh)
And some sleeping (some sleeping?)
And some you know what else (oh, now we good)
I don't have to say it (no, what else? What we talking about?)
(What else?) Come on, tell
You know (no, we don't know like what else?)
(Well?) tell
Tiddlywinks (Tiddlywinks?)
(I thought you were talking about "you know what") yeah
What? (You know what)
I like that part too
(We there, we there, baby) okay, okay
(My girl)
Oops
The song Whoops Now by Janet Jackson is a bright, upbeat tune that discusses the anxieties of not being able to fulfill obligations made to both work and social life. It portrays the story of someone who has made a plan to go on a weekend trip with friends and has packed their bags in excitement. However, their boss calls them at the last moment, demanding that they work instead. The song stresses the disappointment and frustration of having certain plans ruined and being seemingly forced into working instead, and how this can affect one's emotional state. However, the lyrics also tell us that although the situation is upsetting and stressful, it is important to prioritize our personal lives and not always prioritize work over everything else. The catchy chorus of the song, "Whoops now, sorry I can't go" emphasizes the lingering feeling of regret that comes with choosing work over other commitments and instead tells us to make sure to spend time with those we love and care about.
Overall, the song Whoops Now is about the balancing act between work and personal life and emphasizes how important it is to prioritize ourselves and our personal commitments. It urges us not to let our work take complete control of our lives and to say no to obligations that come in the way of our personal plans.
