Better Off
Janie Bay Lyrics

And in the air
Haven't felt it
Can't explain it
Know it's from the red
And in my head
Can't contain it
I'm better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
Better off here
Calling all the heirs
And heiresses
Time to shake it
Can never help it
And you know it's coming back to you some day
But you can't control it
Just wanna fight it
I'm better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
Better off here
I'm better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
Better off here
Better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
I'm better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
You're better off here
I'm better off here
I know it's there
You're better off here
You're better off alone than there
In the first verse, Janie Bay describes a feeling of falling off the edge and being in the air, which she hasn't experienced before and cannot quite explain. She mentions that this sensation comes from something red, possibly alluding to a passionate or intense emotion. It seems to be happening within her mind, but she struggles to contain or understand it fully. The repetition of "never held it" suggests a sense of not being able to grasp or control this feeling.
In the chorus, Janie Bay asserts that she is better off staying where she currently is, despite the knowledge that there is something else out there. She acknowledges that the other person involved is also better off being where they are in that situation. This could imply that both parties are in a better state individually rather than being in a relationship together.
The second verse introduces the idea of calling all the heirs and heiresses, suggesting a gathering of privileged individuals. It is now time to shake off or let go of something, but Janie Bay expresses helplessness in being unable to avoid or resist it. She then states that while the knowledge of this impending event coming back to the person is evident, it cannot be controlled or stopped. There is a desire to fight against the inevitable, but it is implied that it may be futile.
The chorus is repeated twice, emphasizing the belief that Janie Bay and the other person are both better off in their current state, even though the presence of the unknown element is acknowledged. The final line emphasizes the idea that being alone is preferable to being in a situation that may bring harm or discomfort. It suggests that maintaining personal well-being and being independent is preferable to being in a potentially unhealthy or unsatisfying relationship.
