Overall Meaning

Exactly. Quincy was a lazy producer living off of English music at this point. Rod Temperton was his go to producer who's English too. Don't get me wrong, pre 79 Quincy was a genius but he became a brand and hired others to do his work and he'd take credit as "executive producer" when all he was doing was basically signing checks or cashing them.

And yes Quincy Jones version is very good, perfect arrangement for a Friday night dance time.. but the bone flesh and spirit of the song is already totally there in the original version, and the credit must go to Jankel for writing such a magical tune - he strikes me as a classic case of genius disguised as fool, whereas Quincy in this case was the savvy guy pretending to be the genius.

At this stage, however, it is strange that he got awards for this song when it what was Jankel's work originally. I was such a huge fan of the song at the time yet never heard Chas's name mentioned .

I don't think Chazz was complaining because Quincy's "The Dude" was both a commercial/critical success. Which means as a songwriter Chazz made some nice money off of it's success.

Chaz Jankel and Kenny Young wrote this together , first recorded in 1980 , then later by Quincy Jones , I’ve always wondered why everyone thinks that Quincy wrote this , when in fact he just produced a version of it , and yes , agreed , it has a Micheal Jackson feel to it , along with amazing production that still feels sonically fresh today

Just looked at my 45rpm label - It does mention Chas in very tiny fonts - It also mentions Kenny Young - He who wrote "under the board walk" when he was 16 ! and his band was Yellow Dog & Fox -

Just like .E W.F. did with Boogie wonderland... so did Quincy do here. It seems the creators have the mechanics of the song...but it's lacking the groove & the soul that are incorporated by the second version of these tunes.

Chaz Jankel had a great ear for a commercial melody. It's significant that when Jankel left in early 1980, Ian Dury & The Blockheads' hits almost immediately dried up.
