Where No One Knows Me
Jann Arden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got my suitcase, got my dog, I'm packing up my life so far
Got my pictures, got some cash, I'm getting out of here at last

Got my hands on the wheel, got my foot on the pedal
Gonna drive Γ’??til I drop, Γ’??til the tires turn to metal
Gonna sleep when I'm dead, gonna laugh like the devil
Gonna find some place where no one knows me
Gonna stop when the last drop of gas turns to vapour
Gonna ride Γ’??til I can't even seem to remember
Who I was when I left and it don't even matter
Gonna find some place where no one knows me

Feel the sun burn, on my skin
I feel the wind whip through my grin
Tore the rearview mirror down, I wrapped it in my wedding gown

Got my hands on the wheel, got my foot on the pedal
Gonna drive Γ’??til I drop, Γ’??til the tires turn to metal
Gonna sleep when I'm dead, gonna laugh like the devil
Gonna find some place where no one knows me

[Repeat]
Gonna stop when the last drop of gas turns to vapour
Gonna ride Γ’??til I can't even seem to remember

Who I was when I left and it don't even matter
Gonna find some place where no one knows me

Overall Meaning

Jann Arden's song "Where No One Knows Me" tells the story of a woman who is leaving her previous life behind to find a place where nobody knows her. She's packing up her life, including pictures and cash, and hits the road with her dog, driving without stopping until she forgets who she used to be. She wants to find somewhere new, where she can start over and not be defined by her past. This song is all about self-discovery and the desire to escape the struggles of one's current existence.

The first stanza describes her leaving her old life behind, before getting into her car and driving away. She is ready to cut ties completely and start anew. The second and third stanzas describe the journey itself, and how she is willing to keep driving until she runs out of gas, without any particular destination in mind. She's willing to take risks and live in the moment, enjoying life as it comes to her. The final stanza refers to her feeling the wind and sun, and tearing off her rearview mirror, which serves as a metaphor for leaving all of her past behind. She's ready to live in the moment and not worry about what's behind her.

This is a timeless, classic masterpiece next to "Insensitive" and "I Wanna Be Your Girl". This track is still superb to this day and her beauty is still striking. She was too underrated. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯🎼🎧🎀. R. I. P. to the awesome 1990's and 1980's πŸ’―πŸ’―.

I have had the melody of this song stuck in my head for damn near 17 YEARS and I'm only just finding it now. Holy crap, amazing.

I rememeber the first time I heard this song and it hit me so hard. I legit thought I was going to drive away. I sorta did but not as far as I wanted. Jann is endlessly amazing.
