Clean
Japanese House Lyrics

From the movements you made
And the soft gaze you gave
You understood
Ooh, ooh

And I knew it wouldn't last
But in the clean light you cast
I was good
I was good

From the movements you made
And the soft gaze you gave
You understood
Ooh, ooh

And I knew it wouldn't last
But in the clean light you cast
I was good
I was good

And no matter what I do, I know you got me, girl

From the movements you made
And the soft gaze you gave
You understood
Ooh, ooh

And I knew it wouldn't last
But in the clean light you cast
I was good
I was good

All the years my soul, all the things you thought I did
This soulless kid was under all my skin
All the things I tried to say remain within
I'm cooling in the clay
I've always been molded this way
All the years my soul, all the things you thought I did
This soulless kid was under all my skin
All the things I tried to say remain within
I'm cooling in the clay
I've always been molded this way

All the years my soul, all the things you thought I did
This soulless kid was under all my skin
All the things I tried to say remain within
I'm cooling in the clay
I've always been molded this way
All the years my soul, all the things you thought I did
This soulless kid was under all my skin
All the things I tried to say remain within

I'm cooling in the clay
I've always been molded this way

Overall Meaning

The song "Clean" by Japanese House is a powerful reflection on relationship dynamics and the way they shape our identity. The lyrics are poignant and deeply emotional, touching upon the fleeting nature of romantic connections, as well as the way we internalize the opinions of our loved ones.

The opening lines, "From the movements you made, and the soft gaze you gave, you understood," reflect the idea that we can often feel seen and understood by the people we're romantically involved with, even when we struggle to articulate our feelings. This can be a comforting feeling, especially when we're navigating difficult emotional terrain.

However, the song also touches upon the inevitable impermanence of relationships, with the refrain "And I knew it wouldn't last, but in the clean light you cast, I was good." This line reflects the idea that relationships can make us feel "clean" or whole, even if we know that they won't endure forever.

The second half of the song takes a darker turn, with the lines "All the years my soul, all the things you thought I did, this soulless kid was under all my skin." These lines suggest that the singer has internalized the negative opinions of a former partner, and that they're struggling to break free from those perceptions. The repeated refrain of "I've always been molded this way" suggests a sense of resignation or hopelessness, implying that the singer feels trapped by their past experiences.

Overall, "Clean" is a deeply moving song that captures the complexity of human emotions, particularly when it comes to love and relationships.

There is something so therapeutic about this song. I was an absolute mess this morning, dripping in self-doubt. I played this song while I was standing by the road crossing and it suddenly changed my perspective and just rejuvenated me. Something about the production is so smooth and slick that I can't get enough of this song. God bless Matt and George and Amber!

Nice! We were travelling through Connecticut and found a 4 star Japanese Rastaurant via 'Yelp'.. The restaurant was playing ambient music and we asked the waitress what station was on. The waitress went to the back office and came to us with a note...she wrote down 'The Japanese House Radio' on Pandora. Checked out the website thinking it was a radio station from Japan..lol...wrong....Discovered this great artist there.. 2 months later, saw the Philly show and had the opportunity to take great pics with them. So, Thank You YELP!!!! hehe
