Do You Hear What I Hear?
Jason Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said the night wind to the little lamb:
Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb
Do you see what I see?

A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite X 2

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy:
Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?

A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king:
Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?

A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Said the king to the people everywhere:
Listen to what I say:
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
Listen to what I say!

The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night

He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

Overall Meaning

The song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" starts with the night wind asking the little lamb if it sees what it sees, which is a star dancing in the sky with a tail as big as a kite. The little lamb then asks the shepherd boy if he hears what it hears, which is a song ringing through the sky with a voice as big as the sea. The shepherd boy then tells the mighty king that a child shivers in the cold, and they should bring him silver and gold. Finally, the king tells the people to listen to what he says, that they should pray for peace, and the child sleeping in the night will bring them goodness and light.

The song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" was written in 1962 by Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne Baker during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the song was meant to be a call for peace. The song's opening line refers to Ezekiel 17: 1-10, where the prophet Ezekiel sees a vision of an eagle in a large tree, which is then interpreted by God as a warning to the people of Israel. The line "a star, a star, dancing in the night" is also a reference to the Star of Bethlehem, which the Wise Men followed to find the baby Jesus. The song has been covered numerous times by various artists, and it is considered a Christmas classic.
