Absolute legend and unsung hero! Burzootie mix of LL's 'I Need A Beat' is totally original & amazing, 'Drum Machine' (orig and Def Jam version) still sounds like it's from the future!

Shame the sound was suffering from a poor connection, it got better, but was a struggle at times, wish you had cancelled and tried to re-schedule!Β
Me and a friend used his studio in Blackfriars in the mid 90's, was shocked when I mentioned his record Drum Machine and he turned around and pulled out the actual artwork for the label, was amazing to see, wish I had a camera phone back then, he told me some stories about working on Planet Rock and Perfect Beat, which I totally forgot with my bad memory lol

thanks very much for this interview. great to have Jay Burnett provide info that's not easy to access elsewhere. "Drum Machine" (original) is one of my favourite electro 12's of the era. who played the keys on that?

Weirdly, in β86 I bought the Televisions Greatest Hits mix that Jay did, Jane, Get Me Off This Crazy Thing, just because I liked it (the TV tunes used werenβt relevant being from the UK), and then several years later I bought all the early Def Jam releases, partly for the sound Jay brought to them, not realising the connection until perhaps the arrival of the internet in the 00βs.
