Balloon
Jay Foreman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bought a balloon for twenty pence
When I was at the fair
I dropped it by mistake
And it went right into the air

I missed it oh so terribly
When up and up it flew
And then I had a horrible thought:
It probably missed me too

But one thing made me happy
As it floated in the sky

It must have had a lovely view
'Cause it was up so high

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jay Foreman's song "Balloon" tell the story of a simple yet relatable experience. The singer buys a balloon at the fair for a mere twenty pence. However, their excitement turns to despair when they accidentally drop the balloon, causing it to float up into the air. The singer expresses their sadness and longing for the lost balloon, wondering if it missed them as much as they missed it.

The lyrics also highlight a bittersweet realization. As the balloon floats higher and higher, the singer finds solace in the fact that it must have a magnificent view from up in the sky. This thought brings a glimmer of happiness amidst the sadness, as they imagine the balloon enjoying the beauty and wonder of the world from its elevated position.

The song captures the universal theme of loss and the longing for connection. It evokes a sense of nostalgia for the simple joys of childhood, where something as ordinary as a balloon could bring immense happiness. The lyrics also touch on the idea of perspective, reminding us that even in moments of loss, there can still be moments of beauty and wonder.

Line by Line Meaning

I bought a balloon for twenty pence
I purchased a balloon for a low price of twenty pence

When I was at the fair
During my time spent at the fair

I dropped it by mistake
Accidentally, I let go of it

And it went right into the air
The balloon swiftly ascended into the sky

I missed it oh so terribly
I felt a deep longing and sorrow for its absence

When up and up it flew
Continuously, it soared higher and higher

And then I had a horrible thought:
Suddenly, a distressing idea crossed my mind

It probably missed me too
Likely, it also felt the absence of my presence

But one thing made me happy
However, there was one aspect that brought me joy

As it floated in the sky
While it gracefully drifted in the heavens

It must have had a lovely view
Surely, it enjoyed a beautiful sight from up high

'Cause it was up so high
Because it had reached a significant altitude

So this song has inspired me to write a poem, entitled "They say knowledge makes our minds wider" because that's the first line and I am unimaginative.

they say knowledge makes our minds wider,
puffs out its edges, stuffs
cotton into the corners and
expands.

and I shove woollen facts
into the open nooks and broken crannies,
felt figures I no longer need toppling from
forgetfulness
as I push in more words and more things
and more knowledge and more dates and more.

they say knowledge makes our minds wider.
once, chunky crayon gripped in my child's hand,
I liked to stamp onto paper my eyes'
bouncing imagination,
stretched valleys or meadows with yellow crickets
and blue daisies and red crunchy autumn leaves,
a palette from which anything could emerge.

the exact colour didn't matter.
it just needed to be bright and jump
out at whoever caught its glaring glance.
maybe, I thought, if I got the perfect mix
of a shining colour-concoction,

a new friend to paint with would pop out of the page,
a glum grin sponged on its face.

they say knowledge makes our minds wider.
and once, my head was wider than that, boundaries constantly
shoved and pushed and pulled out and further and further and out
by long meadows, tall daisies, colours hiding just
beneath one more slab of concrete paint.

but now I know exactly in which box
each colour fits
and each colour sits
and each colour never ever dares stray from.

I've reigned in my stretching mind.
Tied it up, knotted its ends, stood soldiers on its strict and constricting borders.
Everything is squashed back, nicely,
no daisies in colours of anything but the blinding
white which they are, and always have been.

They say knowledge makes our minds wider,
But facts have only terrified mine
into being just as shrivelled as they tell me it will ever, ever grow.

Years ago back when I was a teacher
I was teaching my class about light
Infra-red on the left of the spectrum
Through to ultra-violet on the right

I showed them the primary colours
And drew circles of blue green and red
I explained that each colour had its own wavelength
And the pupils wrote down what I said

While the class settled down to their homework
One curious boy raised his hand
He looked troubled with eyes open wide so I asked
"Is there something you don't understand?"

"Does that mean there aren't any more colours?
Does that mean that I've seen every one?
I'd hoped some day to find shades that just blew my mind
But I'll never have that kind of fun"

"If there really aren't any more colours
And there'll never be new ones to see
All this time it would seem it was pointless to dream
And the world seems less colourful to me"

Well I just didn't know what to tell him
As he stared at me expectantly
Did he know that I felt just the same way as him
The day my science teacher told me?

Instrumental

"Its not true that there are no more colours
It's not true that you've seen every shade
All the reds and the greens and the vast inbetweens
Can be blended in endless new ways"

"Theres an infinite number of colours
That can shock and delight and surprise
You can have any shade if you know how it's made
And it's only a trick of the eyes"

Please be sure to try your best to fully understand the concepts you will teach.
My math teacher did, and that resulted in me becoming super enthusiastic about maths and thus becoming good at it. The previous teachers didn't care for maths as they didn't take the time to fully learn/understand it, so they couldn't see the beauty and applications, which meant I also didn't care for it. Until I was taught by the great teacher.
And my science teachers didn't understand shit at all. They told misleading information and could not give a comprehensible answer. And instead got angry when I either questioned them or the concept they were trying to teach because they couldn't explain it any more, and the knew that.
Some good examples:
-teacher: "...so, freezing shit boils faster."
"what? that doesn't make sense."
"nah kid it does, cold stuff freezes faster."
"nah nah, it heats faster but boils much slower."
"nah you cunt."
The answer is that freezing shit heats faster because they electron crappers have a larger difference change in speed (for hot and cold object), resulting in each collision resulting in greater change, thus the freezing shit heats faster. However it will boil slower because say you have ice, water, and a stove. The water will boil in 10s, and the ice will become water in 5s then boil in 10s. Thus the ice heats faster than water, but boils slower.

-*we were """"learning"""" about some electric bullshit using this stupid ass picture which was NOT intuitive at all and left so so so so so so so so so many questions because it was such a shit diagram.
I asked what the fuck I was looking at and the teacher replied with "oh yes this is the electric shit" so I continue to ask what each piece is and he has no fucking clue either but keeps going "ok you dumb cunt this is electric shit, you fucking idiot, listen up"
He should have just gone "oh yeah this here is x, which goes over here, then this shitter is y and it looks like this because.... and the entire thing would be this small and located there due to its n properties."

Hi Nikolaus. This song is from my upcoming Edinburgh show and hasn't been released on CD yet, which is why there are no chords for it. But it will be on my website after August 2013. In the meantime I'll happily write the chords out for you. Can you email me using my website so I can reply to you?

@eliparker7151

Please please please release the tabs for this song.

@billthebassist256

Wow. Not only is are the lyrics amazing. But the music is priceless. I can tell you're a fan of the Beatles since this song just sounds similar to that style. Well, To certain songs by the Beatles anyway. I find it hard to put the Beatles into a category since they have so many. Bloody hell, i'm getting carried away. You're really good at the guitar and singing.

@livedandletdie

Huh it sounds eerily similar to an old song from the 90s though. Known by the name The Argus...

@HH_1988

There isn't an infinite amount of colours.

@Faux_Fox_

Has the show been released on CD yet?

What a lovely and warm little song, in all of its simplicity. What I thought were to be a big joke turned to something very happy and memorable instead. These ways of looking at life through several lenses are truly important. I hope that you're proud of your work.
