It’s certainly refreshing to find an artist that refuses to simply dwell on the hard times, instead choosing to bask in the good and the great that life has to offer. At times almost jovial, Nash’s charisma and buoyant attitude is infectious to the last with a sound capable of softening the sternest of hearts.
From the resplendent urgency of ‘Hard Lesson’ to the elegiac ‘Barcelona’, ‘The Things You Think You Need’ has the potential to surpass anything that’s gone before. The writing/recording process for this, his fourth studio album, saw Nash’s creative spark ignite like wild-fire as he wrestled with the concept of producing an album laden with variety and character.
By drawing inspiration from his own life experiences, both past and present, Nash’s inspirational and evocative lyrical imagery possesses the ability to shatter those deep-rooted inadequacies and musters a feeling of liberation and new-found confidence. There’s no sign of an agenda here - Nash’s spirited folk revival offers salvation for the masses.
Too many of today’s artists find it easy to trade on a manufactured kinship - creating an unsettling, short-term bond with audiences that they’re all too willing to discard on a whim. Jay Nash is a different animal altogether and his desire to connect with people is evident as he produces that very first subtle, Americana-style chord.
There’s no bravado, no ill-placed audacity. Nash, its plain to see, is one of us - one of the good guys. A trailblazer for passion and hard graft - a man who knows no limitation.

Over You
Jay Nash Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You knew damn well that I'd run back someday
Over you, over you
Now I'm waiting alone in a paris hotel
I look pretty good, but feel just like hell
Over you, over you
Over you, over you
Now I'm wasting my time, losing my mind
I'm not sleeping enough, drinking too much french wine
It was all second-guessing
It's always my trouble
Finding myself, the boy in the bubble
Over you, over you
Over you, over you
Time is all we got
But you can't wait anymore
Can you now?
And I wouldn't ask
But I'll do my best to figure this thing out
The hotel's got flowers and it's got heroin
Just like we wait for the game to begin
The gas that you gave me, the thousands of miles
I'd give 'em all back just to see your smile
Over you, over you
Over you, over you
Jay Nash's song "Over You" is an emotional tribute to an ex-lover whom the singer is struggling to move on from. The song starts with the singer acknowledging that they have been constantly pushed away by their ex-lover, but they always find themselves running back to them. The chorus "over you, over you" reinforces the idea that the singer is trying to get over the person who has been a big part of their life. The second verse shows the singer in a Paris hotel, still struggling to move on from the past relationship. They look good on the outside, but on the inside, they feel like hell. The singer seems to be going through a phase of self-discovery and is trying to figure out how to get over their past relationship.
In the bridge, Nash talks about the importance of time and how it's running out. The person he's addressing may feel like they can't wait any longer, but he reassures them that he'll try his best to figure things out in order to move on from the past relationship. The last verse talks about a heroin addiction that the singer may have and shows how they are still holding on to the memories of their past relationship. They would give everything just to see their ex-lover's smile once again. The song conveys a sense of heartbreak and the struggle that comes with trying to move on from a past relationship.
